約1カ月間にわたって熱戦が続いた2022年カタールワールドカップ(W杯)も18日のファイナルで幕を閉じた。頂点に立ったのは、36年ぶり3度目のタイトルを手にしたアルゼンチン。MVPを受賞したリオネル・メッシ(PSG)の凄さは誰もが認めるところだが、ヤングプレーヤー賞に輝いたエンソ・フェルナンデス(ベンフィカ)、中盤を支えたマク・アリスター(ブライトン&ホーヴ・アルビオン)、メッシの相棒として活躍したフリアン・アルバレス(マンチェスター・シティ)など若いタレントたちの活躍も大いに目を引いた。彼ら上位進出国には必ずと言っていいほど「違いを作れる選手」がいた。フランスのキリアン・ムバッペ(PSG)、クロアチアのルカ・モドリッチ(レアル・マドリー)、モロッコのハキム・ツィエク(チェルシー)らがその筆頭だ。クロアチアのイバン・ペリシッチ(トッテナム)などは突破力もヘディング力も高く、点も取れて、左FWだけでなく左SBもこなせる。マルチな能力には3位決定戦を解説した中村俊輔(横浜FC)でさえも目を丸くしていたほどだ。

翻って日本代表を見た時、過去のW杯よりは個の能力が上がっているのは確かだ。1大会2ゴールを挙げた堂安律(フライブルク)、高度なドリブル技術で敵を凌駕できる三笘薫(ブライトン&ホーヴ・アルビオン)らは4年後も期待できるタレントだ。だが、彼らが封じられた時の次の手がないのも事実。ボール保持を捨て、カウンターに徹してドイツ・スペイン戦は戦術がハマったものの、主導権を握ったコスタリカ戦で攻めあぐね、クロアチア戦でも決め手を欠いたことを考えると、まだまだ強国に肩を並べるレベルには至っていないと言うしかない。
4年後に向けては遠藤航(シュツットガルト)ら多くの選手が口を揃えている通り、個のレベルアップは急務の課題だ。「選手のほとんどがUEFAチャンピオンズリーグ(CL)決勝トーナメント進出チームか欧州5大リーグの上位クラブにいるようになれば、日本は強くなる」と鎌田大地(フランクフルト)も口癖のように話していたが、それに近い状況を4年間でどれだけ作れるかがポイントになる。

目下、日本で欧州ビッグクラブである程度の結果を残しているのは鎌田と冨安健洋(アーセナル)の2人だけ。鎌田はバルセロナやドルトムントから熱視線を送られていて、来夏にももう一段階ステップアップが実現しそう。そこで中心的存在として活躍できれば4年後のエースという野望も現実になる。
本人は「次(2026年)がホントに勝負。代表への考え方も変わったし、自分が代表を引っ張っていけるような存在になりたい」と目の色を変えていた。今回は守備的戦術の犠牲になった部分も否めないが、本当に決め手を持った選手なら、コスタリカ戦の決定機などでもゴールを奪えていたはず。その勝負強さを身に着けることが重要だ。

冨安にしても、この1年間はケガ続きで、まともに代表でプレーできなかった。カタールW杯も直前に右ハムストリング負傷を再発させ、リハビリの日々を強いられた。そしてドイツ戦に強行出場したと思いきや、頭からで出られたのはクロアチア戦だけ。その大一番で前半からペリシッチの決定機につながるミスパスを犯したりと、本来のレベルとはかけ離れたパフォーマンスにとどまったのだから、彼自身も納得できるはずがない。

「僕個人のパフォーマンスが本当によくなかったし、チームに迷惑かけた。自分に苛立ちしかないし、感情の整理をつけるのが難しい」と日頃温厚な男が怒りを露にしていた。この悪循環から抜け出すためにはまず体を万全に戻すところから取り組むしかない。状態がよければ彼はもっと高みを目指せる選手。今大会で評価を急上昇させたクロアチアのヨシュコ・グヴァルディオル(RBライプツィヒ)に負けじと奮起してほしい。

三笘と堂安ももう一段階、飛躍できる可能性がある。そのためにも各クラブで目に見える結果を残す必要がある。三笘は今季赴いたブライトンで10月からようやくリーグ戦でスタメン出場のチャンスをつかみ、現在に至っている。その地位を盤石にし、不可欠な存在にのし上がることで、CL常連クラブ行きが見えてきそうだ。

堂安にしても、フライブルクが目下、ドイツ・ブンデスリーガ1部で2位という好位置につけている今を逃す手はない。チーム最大の得点源は最前線に陣取るミヒャエル・グレゴリッtチュでここまで10ゴールを奪っているが、堂安にも数字を伸ばしてほしいところ。同じリーグの鎌田が注目されるのも今季前半戦公式戦12ゴールという結果が大きい。彼自身、PSVで挫折した経験を踏まえ、現在の環境で自己研鑽を図っているが、次なる挑戦は必ずモノにしてほしい。それができるだけの自信をカタールで得たはず。そこは期待していいだろう。

久保建英(レアル・ソシエダ)らパリ五輪世代の台頭も必須。重要なクロアチア戦を発熱で棒に振った彼自身はもちろんのこと、2001年生まれの斉藤光毅(スパルタ・ロッテルダム)、藤田譲瑠チマ(横浜F・マリノス)らにはブレイクしてほしいところ。ドリブルで敵を打開できる逸材という意味では、2003年生まれの古川陽介(ジュビロ磐田)や横山歩夢(サガン鳥栖)も面白い。

4年前、三笘がこうなるとは誰も予想できなかった。それだけに誰が出てくるか分からない。未知なる面々が次々と頭角を現し、しのぎを削るようなアタッカー大国になってくれれば、日本の未来も開けてくるはず。そして次こそ8強入りを達成してほしいものである。

メッシ 大好きなマテ茶のストローは7万円超えの特別仕様

メッシと妻は30年来の仲、幼馴染の2人が結ばれW杯で優勝するまで

過去3度の噛み付きで問題起こしたスアレスは38歳でも治らず? ただその相手はまさかのチームメイト…

2011～2020年の世界ベストイレブンが発表!イニエスタとともに中盤に入ったのは相棒チャビではなく…

「まさに死闘ってカンジ」歴史に残るバーレーンとの4-3の激闘!2004年大会プレイバックに反響「このゴールで中澤佑二に惚れた」

希少なドリブラー中嶋淑乃、「仕掛けはできた」なでしこデビュー戦を踏まえ「もっと得点につながるように」

「言われて気付きました」田中碧が鈴木愛理さんへの“縦読み”投稿を否定!?文言はすでに削除

「まだ泣くの早いって」と本田圭佑にツッコまれた日本代表サポーター、元Jリーガーの親友だった「親友が世界的にバズってて最高」

「泣ける」「1番グッときた」ザルツブルクが南野拓実&ファン・ヒチャンの敗退にメッセージ「私達の誇り」
