カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)で優勝し、悲願のトロフィーを獲得したアルゼンチン代表FWリオネル・メッシ。試合後にはそのトロフィーを掲げるメッシの姿や、家族と一緒に喜びを共有する姿が印象的だった。
メッシと喜びを分かち合っていたのは、妻のアントネラ・ロクソさん。2人はともにアルゼンチンのロサリオ出身で、メッシは1987年6月24日に、ロクソさんは1988年2月26日生まれ。同学年ということになる。
2人の出会いは5歳の時。メッシが幼少期を過ごしたクラブ、ニューウェルス・オールドボーイズでプレーした際のチームメイトの従姉妹がロクソさんだったという。そういう意味では、2人は小さい時からの幼馴染だ。
メッシは出会った時から一目惚れしていたことを後に明かしていたが、交際がスタートしたのは17歳頃。ロクソさんの友人が事故死しショックを受けていた時に、当時バルセロナに所属していたメッシがわざわざアルゼンチンに戻って励ましたのだ。そのことがきっかけとなり交際へと発展した。
そこからロクソさんがスペインへと移住すると、2012年11月には長男のチアゴくんが誕生。さらに2015年9月には次男のマテオくんが誕生。2人は事実婚状態を継続していたが、2017年6月にはとうとう故郷のロサリオで挙式して入籍。その後3男のシロくんも誕生している。
メッシは35歳。ロクソさんとは30年来の仲ということになる。ずっとメッシを支えてきたロクソさんにとっても、W杯優勝の喜びは図りしれないものだったのではないだろうか。

2026年の北中米ワールドカップ(W杯)の予選を戦う予定のエリトリア代表だが、予選を辞退することになったという。
11月からはじまる北中米W杯のアフリカ予選。しかし10日、国際サッカー連盟(FIFA)とアフリカサッカー連盟(CAF)は「エリトリアの全試合がキャンセルされた」と共同声明を発表した。
エリトリアサッカー連盟(ENFF)は発表していないが、イギリス『ガーディアン』は、ENFFに近い関係者の話として、選手たちが亡命を申請する可能性があるという懸念があったと伝えた。
エリトリアの選手たちは3カ月かけてアフリカ予選の最初の2試合の準備をしていたとのこと。ただ、海外に遠征した際に亡命する可能性があるという。エリトリアでは終身兵役を多くの選手に対して課しており、それから逃れたい選手が多いという。
ある関係者は「悲痛なこと」と語り、「彼らはエリトリアのサッカーを殺している。選手が説明を求めるのは簡単ではない。抗議活動を行ったとして、刑務所に送られる可能性がある。ただ待ち、彼らが何を決定するかを見ることができる」と語っているという。
エリトリアは2020年1月のスーダン代表との国際親善試合以降、試合を行っていない。公式戦は2019年9月のカタールW杯予選だったため、48カ月試合を行っていないこともあり、FIFAランキングにもいない状況だ。
2009年以来60人以上の選手が代表選手の立場を利用して亡命したとも推定されているとのこと。初戦はモロッコ代表とのアウェイゲームであり、そのまま国外に出ることが強く懸念されていたという。

▽歴史が塗り替えられた。グアテマラ代表のFWカルロス・ルイス(36)は6日、ワールドカップ(W杯)予選における最多得点記録を更新した。
▽カルロス・ルイスは、6日に行われたロシアW杯北中米カリブ海4次予選のセントビンセント・グレナディーン諸島代表戦に先発出場。前半だけでハットトリックを達成すると、後半も2得点を追加。1人で5得点を決め、9-3の大勝に貢献していた。この結果、カルロス・ルイスはW杯予選での得点数を38得点に伸ばしている。代表通算では133試合68得点。
▽これまでの記録は、イラン代表として活躍したアリ・ダエイ氏が持つ35得点だったが、1試合5得点を決めて一気に追い抜くことに成功した。
▽カルロス・ルイスは、1998年からグアテマラ代表としてプレー。現在はキャプテンも務めている。クラブチームでは、ロサンゼルス・ギャラクシーやFCダラス、トロントFCなどMLS(メジャーリーグ・サッカー)でプレー。その他、オリンピア(パラグアイ)、プエブラ(メキシコ)、ベラクルス(メキシコ)などでもプレー。欧州では、ギリシャのPASヤニナ、アリス・テッサロニキでのプレー経験がある。なお、今年7月に母国のムニシパルを退団し、現在は無所属となっている。

日本代表FW上田綺世(フェイエノールト)が、やはり笑顔だ。
3月の2026年北中米ワールドカップ(W杯)アジア2次予選で北朝鮮代表との連戦に臨む予定だった日本。だが、アウェイの平壌で開催予定だった試合が中止となったことで、ホームでの1試合のみで活動を終えた。
週末の試合に向けて選手たちが各自のクラブへと戻っている中、21日に行われたホームゲームで先発していた上田も28日にインスタグラムを更新。「応援ありがとうございました!」とファンやサポーターへの感謝の思いを綴っていた。
そんな中、その上田の投稿に添えられていた1枚の写真が話題だ。
上田は、キックオフ前にスターティングメンバー11人が並んで撮影される集合写真もアップ。他の10人がいかにも試合前というようなきりっとした表情を見せる中、上田だけは満面の笑顔だった。
上田が集合写真の撮影時に笑顔を見せるのは恒例のこと。アジアカップ2023の時も度々話題となっていたが、今回はそのアジアカップ以来の代表戦ということもあり、ファンからは「綺世いつも笑ってて可愛い!!!」、「いつも笑顔が素敵」、「今回もニッコニコ」、「スマイル待ってました!」、「とびきりの笑顔で可愛い」とまたも反響が集まっている。
今回はアウェイでの試合が中止となったこともあり、上田の笑顔も並んだ集合写真はこの時だけ。6月の2次予選でも、またこのとびきりの笑顔が見られるだろうか。

カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)で日本代表を破ったクロアチア代表。準優勝に輝いた4年前のロシア大会に続き、3位と躍進を遂げた。
そんなクロアチアをキャプテンとして引っ張ったのがMFルカ・モドリッチだ。ロシア大会でもキャプテンとしてクロアチアを牽引して大会最優秀選手(MVP)のゴールデンボール賞に選ばれたモドリッチは、今大会でも獅子奮迅の活躍を見せていた。
クロアチア代表として歴代最多出場記録を持つモドリッチだが、その際に行われた記者会見では妻のバーニャさんとの微笑ましいエピソードを持っている。
バーニャさんだけなく、父のスティペさんなど、モドリッチの人生に深く携わる人たちが出席した会見。終始笑顔にあふれていたが、バーニャさんから「いつプレーをやめるのですか?」と鋭い質問が飛んだのだ。
モドリッチは苦笑いを浮かべながら、「(答えるのは)簡単ではないね!わからない、それは僕の愛だ。僕たちは見ていく必要がある。これが僕にとってどれほど大きな意味があるかを。僕が代表チームに行くときにどれだけ幸せかを知っているだろう。あなたはもう少し我慢しなくてはならないね」と答えていた。
長男イバンくん、長女エマちゃん、そして次女ソフィアちゃんと3人の子供がいるモドリッチ夫妻だが、バーニャさんとしては、そろそろ家庭を優先してもいいのではという思いも少なからずあったのかもしれない。
だが、カタールW杯後のインタビューでモドリッチは｢少なくともネーションズリーグまでは続けたい。そうすれば、ユーロ2024のことを考える時間ができるからね｣と代表キャリア継続の意向を示しており、残念ながらもうしばらくは待つ必要がありそうだ。
