リヨンの元セルビア代表MFネマニャ・マティッチは、ユーロ2024の対戦相手であるイングランド代表の選手選考に疑問を呈した。

今月6日、ユーロに臨むイングランド代表の登録メンバー26名が発表された。

ガレス・サウスゲイト監督は33名の予備メンバーからDFハリー・マグワイア、MFジャック・グリーリッシュ、MFジェームズ・マディソンといったカタール・ワールドカップ招集メンバーを外した。
その中で物議を醸したのが、アタッキングサードで違いを生み出すことに長け、とりわけ引いた相手を崩す上での局面打開能力が高いマンチェスター・シティMFの落選だった。

その後、同監督は「攻撃のエリアでは多くの選択肢に恵まれていて、それぞれが少しずつ異なる。マディソンも、ジャックも違ったものをもたらしてくれるはずだし、難しい決断だった」と苦渋の決断であることを強調したが、一部報道ではグリーリッシュ落選に衝撃を受けた一部選手が指揮官にその理由の説明を求めたとの話も出ていた。
この決断はイングランド国内で大きな話題を集めているが、グループステージで対戦するセルビアの元重鎮にとっても予想外の出来事だったようだ。

マンチェスター・ユナイテッド時代にグリーリッシュと対戦経験があるマティッチは、自身のX(旧ツイッター)を通じて、元同僚で予備メンバー選考の段階で落選したFWマーカス・ラッシュフォードと共に同選手の落選が母国にとって「良いニュース」だと持論を展開した。

「個人的にはラッシュフォードやグリーリッシュのようなプレーヤー、つまり一手で試合を決定づけられるプレーヤーをチームに常に迎えたいものだ」

「彼らは選ばれなかったが、我々(セルビア)にとっては良いニュースだ」

今シーズンのパフォーマンスだけを鑑みれば、エベレチ・エゼ、アンソニー・ゴードンの2選手はより優れたパフォーマンスを披露し、ハリー・ケインのコンディションに不安を抱えていた中でのイヴァン・トニー、オリー・ワトキンスの両CFの招集も理解できる。ただ、“一発”や明確な武器を持つ両選手の能力を評価する元セルビア代表MFにとって、今回のライバルの選手選考は一言意見を言いたくなるものだったようだ。

フランスW杯の戦犯が…ベッカム史上最高のFKから20年「特別な瞬間だった」

ブリッジは“不倫男”テリーを未だに許さず? 自身の近くに引っ越し発覚後、自宅を売却に出す

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
