カナダ代表を指揮するマーシュ監督

カナダサッカー協会(CSA)は13日、アメリカ人指揮官のジェシー・マーシュ氏(50)が同国代表の新監督に就任したことを発表した。契約期間は2026年の北中米ワールドカップ(W杯)終了までとなる。

カナダ代表では2018年1月から指揮を執ってきたジョン・ハードマン監督が、2023年8月にトロントFCへ引き抜かれる形で退任。その後はアシスタントコーチのマウロ・ビエロ氏が暫定監督を務めている状態が続いていた。

新監督に就任したマーシュ氏は、2009年に現役生活を引退すると指導者の道に進み、引退直後にアメリカ代表のボブ・ブラッドリー監督の下でアシスタントコーチに就任。

その後、メジャーリーグ・サッカー(MLS)のモントリオール・インパクト(現CFモントリオール)やニューヨーク・レッドブルズ、レッドブル・ザルツブルク、RBライプツィヒなどで監督を歴任した。

2022年2月からリーズ・ユナイテッドの指揮官に就任すると就任初年度は低迷していたチームをプレミアリーグ残留に成功させたが、積極補強して臨んだ翌シーズンは第20節終了時点で4勝6分け10敗の17位と低迷。成績不振を理由に昨年2月にリーズの監督を解任されていた。

ユルゲン・クリンスマン監督が退任してから監督が不在だった韓国代表の指揮官候補点されていたが、交渉が難航していると報じられていた。

女子選手の意見を参考に配慮し白パンツを中止、ナイキが女子W杯出場13カ国の新ユニフォームを発表!
