0-0で迎えた22分、1トップで先発したFWミッチェル・デューク(FC町田ゼルビア)が右からのクロスにドンピシャボレーで合わせるもわずかにゴール右へ外し、28分にはCKの流れからDFカイ・ロールズ(ハート・オブ・ミドロシアン)がゴール正面からのシュートを枠外へ飛ばす。
後半序盤に先制を許したなか、80分、左CKにファーへ走り込んだMFコナー・メトカーフ(ザンクトパウリ)がフリーでヘディングシュートを放つも右ポストを直撃。最後まで1点が遠かったオーストラリアは、欧州屈指の強豪を相手に何度か訪れた決定機を決めきれず、0-1の敗戦を喫した。
フル出場したMFジャクソン・アーバイン(ザンクトパウリ)は試合後、「イングランドと敵地で対戦する機会はそうそうない。今夜は何かを掴める大きなチャンスかもしれないと感じていたよ。これも僕らの精神力を表す1つの証拠だと思う」と、敗れはしたが、一定の充実感を語る。
この点についてはアーバインも「イングランドとの違いはここだったかもしれない。トップクラスの選手たちは0.5秒で冷静さを確保し、危険なエリアにゴールを運んだ。それは試合に勝つための唯一のゴールに繋がった。僕たちは学ぶべき教訓はここにある」と、失点シーンを振り返る。
イングランドの得点は58分。DFトレント・アレクサンダー=アーノルド(リバプール)がボックス左へ対角のロングボールを送り、中央へ折り返したボールにFWオリー・ワトキンス(アストン・ビラ)が詰め込んでゴールイン。オーストラリアは通算2キャップ目の27歳センターバック、DFキャメロン・バージェス(イプスウィッチ)がワトキンスを捕まえきれなかった。
アーノルド監督は試合中にタッチライン際で喉を潰してしまったとのことで、試合後の取材対応はマンチェスター・ユナイテッドで長年コーチを務め、現在はオーストラリアのコーチを務めるレネ・ミューレンスティーン氏が代行。課題を突きつけられながらも奮闘した選手たちを称えた。
「ビッグチーム(イングランド)に対して強くプレスにいける代表チームは多くない。なぜなら代表チームのコーチ陣は選手と十分な時間を過ごせないからね。冷静かつ安全なアプローチが求められるところだ」
「それでも今夜のオーストラリアは常に全力を尽くし、可能な限りプレスをかけていった。傍で見ている我々としても素晴らしいことだったよ」
イングランドはFWハリー・ケイン(バイエルン)やMFジュード・ベリンガム(レアル・マドリー)、MFデクラン・ライス(アーセナル)を温存するなど準主力級が中心の顔ぶれだったが、オーストラリアにとってはそれでも十分な強化の場となった。
17日にはブレントフォードの本拠地でニュージーランド代表との国際親善試合を戦い、日本代表と同様、11月からは北中米3カ国共催ワールドカップ(W杯)のアジア二次予選に挑む。
