フランスは15日に行われたユーロ2020グループF第1節で、ドイツ代表と対戦。前半攻勢をかけたチームは、MFポール・ポグバの展開からDFリュカ・エルナンデスが鋭いクロスを入れると、これをDFマッツ・フンメルスがクリアし切れずオウンゴールで先制に成功。その後はFWキリアン・ムバッペのスピードを活かしたカウンターで相手守備陣を脅かし続け、そのまま1-0のスコアで勝利した。試合後の会見に臨んだデシャン監督は、強敵相手に白星を飾ったチームを称賛。効率よく勝ち点を重ねていくことの重要性についても語っている。

「今日は非常に良い相手との大勝負だった。選手たちが試合に向け準備してくれることは分かっていたよ。前半はもう少しうまくボールを扱えたかもしれないが、2点目を決めるのは時間の問題だと思っていた。とはいえ、後半もそこまで苦しくはなかったと思う。クオリティと才能を備えた、強い選手たちの試合だった」

「フットボールでは効率が命だ。ディフェンスでもオフェンスでもね。ゴールを奪えないとしても、勝利するためには1点あればいい。我々はスタートから試合をコントロールして相手に問題を起こすことを目指していたが、守備力もしっかり備えているんだ」

「この試合は、準決勝や決勝のカードになってもおかしくないようなものだった。我々のグループにおいて、この勝ち点3をとることは非常に重要だ。自分たちのレベルはしっかりと示せたこともあり、この勝利は我々にとって良いものになるだろう」
