マンチェスター・シティは22日にイングランド女子代表FWエレン・ホワイト(33)が、23日に同代表MFジル・スコット(35)が引退を表明したと発表した。

ホワイト、スコットともに母国で開催されたユーロ2022にイングランド女子代表の一員として尽力。イングランドにおける56年ぶりの主要タイトルを置き土産にスパイクを脱ぐこととなった。

ホワイトは8歳からアーセナルの育成組織に所属し、2005年に16歳の時にチェルシーでトップチームキャリアをスタートさせた。

じん帯損傷に苦しんだリーズ・カーネギー(現:リーズ・ユナイテッド)を経て、2010年7月にアーセナルへと帰還。3年間で3度のリーグ優勝を含む、7つのタイトルを獲得した。さらにノッツ・カウンティ、バーミンガムを経て2019-20シーズンからはシティでプレー。シティでは3シーズンで公式戦90試合に出場し、34ゴールを挙げている。

イングランド女子代表としても、3度のワールドカップ(W杯)と3度の欧州選手権(ユーロ)を含む113試合に出場。52得点はライオネセス(イングランド女子代表の愛称)では最多、男女通じてもウェイン・ルーニーの53得点に次ぐ2番目の数字となっており、なでしこジャパンもたびたび苦渋をなめさせられた。

オリンピックにはイギリス代表として2012年のロンドン大会、2021年の東京大会に出場している。

スコットは、2004-05シーズンからサンダーランドでシニアのキャリアをスタートし、エバートンで地位を築く。2013年末に女子チームをプロ化したシティへ加入し、コンチネンタルカップ優勝へ貢献すると、通算でもその他6つの国内タイトルを獲得。クラブ史上3位となる194試合に出場した。

ライオネセスでも中盤を支え続けたレジェンドの代表キャップ数は「161」。ファラ・ウィリアムズに次ぐ、男女通じて歴代2位の記録だ。通算27ゴールをマークし、W杯、ユーロのいずれも4大会に出場。ホワイト同様、イギリス代表として2度のオリンピックを経験している。

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】

女子W杯2023、視聴者数が世界各国で記録的な数字に! イングランドやスペインはもちろん中国でも

女子サッカーへの関心を裏付ける数字となっているようだ。スペイン女子代表の初優勝で幕を閉じたオーストラリア&ニュージーランド女子ワールドカップ(W杯)。両開催国ともに入場者数が過去最高を記録するなど、大盛況のうちに終わった。中継の数字にも関心の高さは見て取れ、オーストラリアでは準決勝のイングランド女子代表戦をピーク時に過去最高となる1115万人が視聴したと伝えられていた。また、『ロイター』は各国の視聴者数に関するデータをまとめており、イギリスでは『BBC One』のピーク視聴者数が1200万人に。『iTV』でも放送された決勝戦は、合計最高視聴者数が1440万人に達したと、集計会社バーブが報告している。なお、イングランドが初優勝した母国での女子欧州選手権(ユーロ)2022では1740万人、7月に行われたテニスの男子ウィンブルドン決勝では1130万人だったと比較。関心の高さがうかがえる。スペインでは560万人が決勝戦を視聴し、最高視聴者数は740万人に。これはスペインにおける女子サッカーの試合のテレビ視聴者数としては史上最高記録とのこと。『バルロベント・コミュニケーション』が発表したデータによると、スペインのテレビ視聴者の56.2%が男性だったという。中国ではグループステージのイングランド戦を5390万人が視聴。1試合の最高視聴者数を記録した。世界での総視聴者数は明記されていないものの、FIFA女子サッカー最高責任者のサライ・ブレナン氏によれば、開幕前には前回大会の11億2000万人を上回る20億人以上と見込まれていた。各国の施策による女子チームへの強化体制が実を結び、ゲームの強度や戦術の向上、さらには有望な若手、スペイン女子代表FWサルマ・パラジュエロやコロンビア女子代表MFリンダ・カイセドらが多数台頭した今大会。W杯後には初のUEFA女子ネーションズリーグがスタートし、来年にはパリ・オリンピック、さらに翌年には女子ユーロが控えており、まだまだ世界の女子サッカー熱は冷めそうにない。 2023.08.23 21:27 Wed
