サウスゲイト、イタリアとのリベンジ戦で大記録のケインに「精神的な強さの表れ」

イングランド代表のガレス・サウスゲイト監督が振り返った。『UEFA.com』が報じている。

23日のユーロ2024予選でイタリア代表のホームに乗り込んだイングランド。前半にデクラン・ライスとハリー・ケインのゴールで2点を先行すると、後半に1点を返され、ルーク・ショーも退場したが、逃げ切った。

イタリアの地で実に1961年以来の勝利となり、前回決勝のリベンジも果たしたサウスゲイト監督は前半の流れを維持できなかったのを悔やみつつ、総じて満足。次のウクライナ代表戦に意識も向けた。

「前半は素晴らしい出来だったが、後半はとてもタフなものだった。前後半で違う顔を見せてしまったね。前半はプレスを掻い潜ってすぐに試合をコントロールでき、3-0にできたかもしれない。だが、後半はいつくかの判断ミスがあり、流れが変わってしまった」

「10人の戦いになってからも、何とか団結できた。戦い、苦しみ、そして歴史的な勝利を手にしたんだ。だが、これからは次の試合、ウクライナ戦のことを考えないとね。彼らは今夜、試合がなかったし、休養十分なはず。ウェンブリーに集うファンの力が必要だ」

また、イングランド代表歴代得点記録でウェイン・ルーニー氏を抜いて、単独トップに立ったケインにも「彼は並外れた存在」と惜しみない賛辞の言葉を送っている。

「このようなコンディションでの記録破りは彼の持つ精神的な強さのすべてを物語るもの。周りの選手は彼に声援を送ったが、あれは記録だけでなく、カタールでの経験に対するものでもある」

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】

「泣きながら電話した」アルコール依存症に苦しむ元イングランド代表ガスコイン氏が家を出て居候に、それでも闘病に決意「戦い続ける」
