ブライトン&ホーヴ・アルビオンのDFベン・ホワイトがユーロ2020に向けたイングランド代表の残るひと枠を勝ち取った。

イングランドサッカー協会(FA)が7日、2日に行われたオーストリア代表戦との国際親善試合で負傷して、離脱を余儀なくされたリバプールのDFトレント・アレクサンダー=アーノルドに代わり、ホワイトを追加招集したと発表。背番号は「22」の着用が決定している。

ホワイトはイングランドが先月25日に発表した33名の予備登録メンバーに含まれ、記念すべき初招集を受けたが、絞り込みの段階でFWメイソン・グリーンウッドやMFジェシー・リンガード、MFジェームズ・ウォード=プラウズ、DFベン・ゴッドフリーらとともに落選した。

だが、ホワイトは全快を目指すDFハリー・マグワイアがまだ万全でなく、チャンピオンズリーグ(CL)決勝を戦ったマンチェスター・シティ勢とチェルシー勢も合流が遅れるなかで、本大会前最後の一戦となる6日のルーマニア代表戦に先発。アピールに徹していた。

なお、滑り込みでユーロ行きの切符を手にしたホワイトは自身のツイッターで「誇らしく、光栄だ! 僕の全てを捧げる」と喜びの思いとともに決意を新たにしている。

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
