アストン・ビラがサウサンプトンからイングランド代表MFジェームズ・ウォード=プラウズ(26)の獲得も目指しているようだ。

今季のプレミアリーグで最終的に11位という結果に終わったが、一時期に上位をかき乱す存在になるなど、残留争いに巻き込まれることなく、1年を戦い切ったビラ。アーセナルも目を光らせるノリッジ・シティのアルゼンチン人MFエミリアーノ・ブエンディアをクラブレコードの移籍金3300万ポンド(約51億円)で射止めたといわれる。

今季のチャンピオンシップでMVPに輝いた注目株の争奪戦を制したばかりのビラだが、イギリス『ガーディアン』によれば、補強はそれだけにとどまらない模様。来季のさらなる躍進を期すビラは補強をできるだけ早く完了させようと、ブエンディアの加入で合意に達した翌日からウォード=プラウズの獲得にシフトしたという。

サウサンプトン一筋のウォード=プラウズはリーグ屈指のプレースキッカーとして評判高い中盤の選手。今季もリーグ最多の被ファウル数を記録したイングランド代表MFジャック・グリーリッシュを擁するビラはウォード=プラウズのプレースキック精度が攻撃の強化に繋がり、武器にもなるとして、白羽の矢を立てたようだ。

また、ビラのディーン・スミス監督は今夏に関して量よりも質のスタンスで、新戦力に大きなインパクトを与えるプレーを求めている様子。ウォード=プラウズは年齢やリーグでの経験値という部分だけでなく、プレースタイルの面でもスミス監督が求めるといわれるプロフィール基準に合致する存在だという。

アストン・ビラがザニオーロの買い取りを見送る方針で一致か
