クリスタル・パレスのイングランド代表MFエベレチ・エゼが、2年前の悪夢を振り返った。イギリス『ミラー』が伝えている。 エゼはクリスタル・パレスで背番号「10」を背負う攻撃的セントラルハーフ。今シーズンのプレミアリーグは全38試合に出場し、キャリアハイの10ゴールを記録した。 これらの活躍が認められ、今月16日にマルタ代表、19日に北マケドニア代表とユーロ2024予選で戦うイングランド代表に初選出。現在はデビューに向けて合宿地でアピールを続けている。 しかし、エゼがA代表メンバーに名を連ねるのは、実は2度目。ユーロ2020本大会に向けたラージリストに入っていたものの、クリスタル・パレスの練習でアキレス腱断裂の大ケガを負い、断念せざるを得なくなった。ラージリスト入りを知ったのは、練習で足に違和感を覚えたわずか数分後だったという。今回のマルタ代表戦に向けた記者会見で明かした。 「誰かに足を踏まれたか、蹴られたかと思った。でも、周りに誰もいなかった。深刻な問題が起きたとわかったよ。すぐに医務室へ行き、診断を受け、アキレス腱が切れていると言われたんだ。妻に連絡しようと携帯電話を開いたら…イングランド代表のラージリストに入ったというメッセージが届いていた」 「悲しい状況だったのは間違いないよ。でも、僕は物事を違う角度から見つめたい。このケガは、まるで僕を正しい軌道に乗せるための試練のようだ。それまで正しいステップを踏んできたと確信していたし、これも新たなハードルなのだと考えた」 ユーロ本大会行きを逃してから約2年、諦めずに努力を重ねた結果、再びチャンスが巡ってきたエゼ。ルーツであるナイジェリアの代表入りを断り続けてきた選択が間違っていなかったと感じているようだ。 「家族や妻、周囲の人たちとも話し、多くのアドバイスを貰い、何が最善かを考えてきた。(イングランド代表入りの)電話を受けて、これが正しい決断だったとようやく実感したよ。努力が結実して嬉しい。次は自分自身の価値を示したいね。その立場にいられることに感謝しているよ」 2023.06.14 14:50 Wed

ジェラード監督が世界4位の高給取り指揮官に… アル・イテファクでの年俸は約23億円
