2015年カナダ大会決勝でなでしこジャパンを破り、2019年フランス大会ではオランダ女子代表を下して連覇を達成したアメリカ。オーストラリア&ニュージーランド女子ワールドカップ(W杯)では、史上初となる大会3連覇が懸かっている。

今大会限りでの引退を表明しているミーガン・ラピノー(OLレイン)らベテラン勢だけでなく、トリニティ・ロッドマン(ワシントン・スピリット)やソフィア・スミス(ポートランド・ソーンズFC)といった若手も台頭。ベッキー・サウアーブラン(ポートランド・ソーンズFC)らを負傷で欠く中でも、FIFAランキング1位の優位性は揺るぎそうにない。

アメリカは11日に会場となるニュージーランドへ到着。出産を経て母として初のW杯を迎えるモーガンは、自身のインスタグラムで現地の様子を公開している。

1枚目にはラテ。コーヒー愛好家の楽園であるニュージーランドからとあって、「地球上で最高のコーヒー」、「ニュージーランドのコーヒーがお好きですか、それは間違いありません」といった反響や、「待ちきれないね!」、「お揃いのスウェットをゲットしたよ」といった声が寄せられた。

さらにはチームメイトとの食事風景も投稿。「寿司!!!」との驚きのコメント通り、各選手が箸を用いて寿司に舌鼓を打つ姿を残している。

グループEに入ったアメリカは、22日にベトナム女子代表、27日にオランダ、8月1日にポルトガル女子代表と対戦。勝ち進み方によっては準々決勝で日本と対戦する可能性がある。

「ペプシの宣伝か?」アメリカが新ユニフォームを発表も、アウェイのカラーには既視感を覚える人も「アイスキャンディーみたいなユニフォーム」
