かつてイングランド代表を指揮したスウェーデン人指揮官のスヴェン・ゴラン・エリクソン氏(75)が、末期ガンであることを告白した。

エリクソン氏は、クラブチームではベンフィカ、ローマ、フィオレンティーナ、サンプドリア、ラツィオなどを指揮。2001年から2006年までイングランド代表を指揮し、日韓ワールドカップとドイツ・ワールドカップを指揮した。

その後、マンチェスター・シティやメキシコ代表、コートジボワール代表、レスター・シティなどで指揮をとると、近年はアジアで指導を続け、中国スーパーリーグの広州富力(広州城FC)、上海上港(上海海港)、深圳市足球倶楽部、フィリピン代表などを指揮した。

そのエリクソン氏は、イングランド代表を指揮した初の外国人監督としても知られ、2004年のユーロでは準々決勝までチームを導き、デイビッド・ベッカムらを要するスターチームを指揮していた。

スウェーデンのラジオ『P1』のインタビューに応じたエリクソン氏は、「できる限り長く抵抗したい」とコメント。自身がガンであると診断され、深刻な状態であることを明かした。

「私は深刻な病気を患っている。最も良い場合でも1年、最悪の場合ははるかに短くなるだろう。正確に言うことは不可能であり、考えない方が良いと思っている」

指導者として42年活動したエリクソン氏だが、健康上の問題を理由におよそ1年前に退いていた。ガンと診断されてからも、ポジティブに生きることを誓ったという。

「脳を騙そうとすると、簡単に屈してネガティブになり、家に閉じこもってしまう。困難な時でも屈せず、ポジティブな方向に目を向けるように努めた方が良い」

多くの選手たちを指導してきたエリクソン氏。本人の言葉通り、できるだけ長く抵抗してもらいたいものだ。
