イングランド新指揮官にトーマス・トゥヘル氏が就任した。イギリス『スカイ・スポーツ』が報じる。

ユーロ2024を最後にガレス・サウスゲイト監督が退任したイングランド。9月、そして今月の活動までをリー・カーズリー暫定体制で繋ぐなか、ドルトムントやチェルシー、バイエルンと強豪クラブを率いした実績を持つドイツ人指揮官を招へいした。

イングランド史でスヴェン・ゴラン・エリクソン氏、ファビオ・カペッロ氏に続く3人目の外国籍指揮官となるトゥヘル氏はウェンブリー・スタジアムの就任会見で心境を語る。

「大きな仕事だとすぐ理解した。私は日頃から自分が従事する仕事こそが最も大きな仕事だと思っている。比較はあまり好きじゃないが、とても大きなことで、名誉なことだと感じる。私はクラブフットボールの出身だから、リズムや責任、役割というのは新たなもので、エキサイティングだ。そういうのにもオープンになれたし、アイデアというのも気に入った」

また、「協会にトロフィーが欠けているのは知るところ。実現させる上で手助けになりたい」と1966年のワールドカップ(W杯)を最後にメジャータイトルから実に58年も遠ざかる現状の打破に意欲を示す。

そんな51歳指揮官に注目される1つのチームを作っていくか、だ。その点においては「ガレスの文化を土台に築いていく」と明言した上でこう続ける。

「安定感と一貫性という点で、彼らは素晴らしい仕事をした。最近の大会で残した結果を見ても素晴らしい。U-21はタイトルを掴んでいるし、若いチームもタイトルを争っている。女子チームだってタイトルを獲得している、我々もそこにいる」

「連盟もそう思っているし、それがこの仕事を引き受けた理由だ。私は好奇心旺盛だし、学ぶ意欲もある。クラブフットボールとは異なるスケジュールだが、連盟の質を味方に自分のアイデアを組み合わせていけるのは大きかった」

なお、契約は2026年北中米ワールドカップ(W杯)までの1年半で、仕事始めは来年1月から。トゥヘル監督は「1月から特別な選手たちとアメリカで夢を叶える旅を始めるのがとても楽しみだ」と北中米W杯優勝を意識するコメントも残す。

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】

相手が恐れる右手…ストライカーの完成形と呼ばれた男、アラン・シアラー
