サンダーランドの下部組織で育ったヘンダーソンは、コヴェントリー・シティへのレンタル移籍を経験。2011年7月にリバプールへと加入した。
ここまで12シーズンを戦い、公式戦492試合で33ゴール61アシスト。この12年間は浮き沈みもあった中、キャプテンを務め、チームを牽引。黄金時代を支える主軸としてプレーした。
そのヘンダーソンには、今夏の移籍市場で躍動するサウジアラビアから関心が。クラブOBであり、偉大な先輩でもあるスティーブン・ジェラード監督が率いるアル・イテファクが強い関心を示している。
ヘンダーソンはオファーを検討していた中、移籍市場に精通するジャーナリストのファブリツィオ・ロマーノ氏によれば、そのオファーを受け入れる決断をしたという。
ヘンダーソンはユルゲン・クロップ監督とも話をしたとのこと。クロップ監督からは移籍を許可されたともいわれている。
なお、リバプールは1000万ポンド(約18億1000万円)を大きく超える移籍金が見込まれている状況。ジェラード監督にとって大きすぎる補強が実現するのか、クラブ間の交渉が注目を集める。
