これだけの後押しを受ければ、選手は間違いなく奮起するだろう。クロアチアのサポーターの掲げた旗が大きな話題となっている。

モロッコ代表との初戦をドローで終えたクロアチア代表は、27日に行われたカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)グループF第2節でカナダ代表と対戦した。

開始早々に失点を喫するも、アンドレイ・クラマリッチとマルコ・リバヤのゴールで前半のうちに逆転。後半にも再びクラマリッチがネットを揺らし、終了間際にはロヴロ・マイェルがダメ押し弾を決め、4-1で今大会初勝利を飾った。

勝利の陰にはサポーターの強い後押しがあった。

クロアチアサッカー連盟(HNS)は27日に公式インスタグラムを更新。「ワールドカップでの1日を始める最良の方法は?」とはじめ、試合前のサポーターの行動を紹介した。

選手が滞在するホテルの前で、有志サポーターは赤白チェックの生地に「CROATIA」と書かれた超ロングフラッグを掲げて声援を送った。海外線を覆ったバナーは高層からの写真でも末端を確認できないほどの長さ。200m以上と説明されている。

この様子には閲覧者から「いつもFlamesと共にいるファンの願いです」、「ワールドカップで優勝したいんだ」、「行こう!クロアチア」、「美しい」、「俺たちの誇り」といった気持ちのこもったコメントが多数届けられた。HNSの会長マリヤン・クスティッチ氏とズラトコ・ダリッチ監督からもサポーターへ感謝が伝えられた。

クロアチア『N1』によれば、このフラッグは初戦の前にも警察の許可を得てドーハ中心部で掲げられたとのこと。重さは100kg。約500人のファンによって展開されたと伝えている。

クロアチアは第3節でベルギー代表と対戦し、引き分け以上で自力でのクループステージ突破が決まる。前回大会は決勝で涙を呑んだヴァトレニ(クロアチア代表の愛称)は、大声援を力に代えて初優勝を目指す。
