グループリーグが終わってみれば、“波乱の主役”は日本だったと言っても過言ではないだろう。フランスがチュニジアに、ブラジルがカメルーンに負けたのも意外だったが、すでにグループリーグ突破を決めており、両チームともスタメンを9人も入れ替えたのだから「必然」とも言える。
同じ過ちは日本もコスタリカ戦で犯したが、同じミスを結果的にスペインも犯した。左SBジョルディ・アルバに代えて19歳のアレハンドロ・バルデを初スタメンに起用した。若返りに積極的なルイス・エンリケ監督だけに、バルセロナでの実績からバルデを起用したのも頷ける。
しかし後半3分、トラップが大きくなったところを伊東純也に突かれ、こぼれ球を拾った堂安律に同点弾を叩き込まれる。さらに3分後、堂安のタテへの突破から逆転ゴールを許すことになった。
以前の堂安は、カットインしてからも相手を完全に抜き去ろうとボールを持ちすぎる傾向が強かった。久保建英と違い、タテに突破する回数が少ないことでカットインを読まれることも多かった。
しかし今シーズンの彼は、タテへ持ち出して右足でクロスを上げることも増え、シュートのタイミングも以前より早くなった。コースさえあれば、相手を抜き去る前に打つなど、すでにフライブルクでも欠かせない戦力になっている。
ドイツに続きスペインも撃破したことで、日本はグループEを首位で通過した。前半30分過ぎからの日本は、最終ラインを高く保ち、ガビやアルバロ・モラタらが下がってボールを受けようとしても、谷口彰悟と吉田麻也らがマンマークで食らいついてティキ・タカを封じようとした。
前半終了間際には2人ともイエローカードを受けたが、これくらいしないとティキ・タカは止められない。ドイツが試合の流れを引き寄せるため、スペイン戦の後半開始直後に見せたプレーでもあった。
日本がグループリーグを首位で突破したのは02年日韓大会以来2度目の快挙である。当時の日本は、第3戦のチュニジア戦を大阪で戦った。グループリーグを「2位通過」と想定し、ラウンド16ではグループC1位のブラジルとの対戦が濃厚だが、それもやむを得ないとして決戦の会場を神戸にした。大阪から神戸なら移動のストレスがないからだ。
ところが日本はグループHを首位で通過したため、ラウンド16は仙台でトルコと対戦することになった。FW柳沢敦を体調不良で起用できなかったことも痛かったが、フィリップ・トルシエ監督はノルマのグループリーグ突破を果たしたことでトルコ戦は「ボーナス」と言い、西澤明訓とアレックス(後の三都主アレサンドロ)を初スタメンに起用。しかし“奇策”は実らず0-1で敗退した。
幸いカタールW杯はほとんどがドーハ市内か近郊の都市で開催されているため、移動のストレスはない。そして当コラムでも指摘していたが、ドイツ戦とスペイン戦の行われたハリファ国際スタジアム(厳密にはドーハ郊外のアル・ラーヤンにある)は11年のアジアカップ決勝で、延長戦の末にオーストラリアを倒した縁起のいいスタジアムでもある。
当時のハリファ国際スタジアムは開催国のカタールがグループリーグで使用したため、日本は決勝までプレーすることはなかった。今大会ではラウンド16の1試合と3位決定戦しか使用されないため、日本がここでプレーするにはクロアチアとブラジル対韓国の勝者を撃破しなければならない。
そんなスタジアムの“験担ぎ”に頼らず、まずは実力でクロアチアを倒して欲しいところ。会場は初めてプレーするアル・ジャヌーブだが、条件はクロアチアも同じ。ノックアウトステージは延長、PK戦もあるだけに総力戦の戦いになることは間違いない。
唯一の気がかりは、前回のロシアW杯でクロアチアは決勝以外の3試合で3度の延長戦を経験していることだ(うち2試合はPK戦の勝利)。できれば日本は90分間で決着をつけたい。

「卑しいネズミ」「ホルモン漬けのチビ」バルセロナ幹部のメッシへの侮辱発言が流出し大騒動…元会長らも関与も真相は?

「なんて可愛いんでしょ」オナイウ阿道が妻と愛娘と家族ショット、七五三での着物姿に「とってもかわいい」など祝福の声

「石油王みたい」「すっかりアラブの人に」谷口彰悟がカタールの民族衣装を着こなし話題!鷹を腕に乗せる優雅な姿が反響「馴染みすぎや」

「ずっと仲良しでいいですね」「最高すぎる」堂安律もダブルピース! ハワイを共に楽しんだ相手は10年来の仲間「素敵です」
