ケインはこの試合、節目となる国際Aマッチ通算100試合目にして、自ら祝砲をあげる2ゴール。タイトルと無縁であることが知られるケインだが、長年の積み重ねがこうやって形となり、本人の喜びもひとしおだろう。

そんなケインに触発された様子なのがストーンズ。ケインより1つ年下で通算81キャップ…ユーロ2024で全7試合フルタイム出場の30歳は「僕も100キャップに到達したい」と語る。

笑顔で目標を設定した一方、ここまでの通算81キャップ中「68」キャップを与えてくれたガレス・サウスゲイト前監督には感謝も。

「キャップ数は監督に与えられるモノだから、決定を下す人たちには感謝を。ガレスのもとで共に戦えたことを本当に嬉しく思う。彼にはキャリアが厳しい時期に支えてもらったんだ」

「自分でもこのキャリアは驚きだけどね。50キャップも無理だと思っていたら、気づけば75キャップ、そして今日で81になったらしい。さっき聞いたらリオ・ファーディナンドと並んだそうだよ。とても光栄だけど…なんだか口にするとヘンな感じだ(笑)」

順調なら、2026年W杯本大会ごろには100キャップまで到達しているであろうストーンズ。マーク・グエイらが台頭するなか、まずはシティでコンスタントにプレーしておきたい。

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
