スペインは7月31日に行われた東京オリンピックの準々決勝でコートジボワールと対戦。120分の激闘を5-2のスコアで制し、3日に行われる準決勝ではU-24日本代表と戦うことになった。
前後半に2度の先行を許す厳しい展開を強いられたが、試合終了間際に途中出場のFWラファ・ミルが決めた劇的同点ゴールで辛くも延長に持ち込むと、延長前半に相手のハンドで得たPKをオヤルサバルがきっちり決めて初めて勝ち越しに成功。その後、ラファ・ミルがハットトリックを達成し、最終的には3点差を付けての勝ち上がりとなった。

「99%の希望を失った」スペインの名医がガビの負傷に言及「劇的な状況になってしまう」、原因は「選手の試合数」
