ドイツは19日にユーロ2020グループF第2節のポルトガル代表戦に臨み、15分に先制を許したが、前半のうちに2つのオウンゴールで逆転すると、後半もMFカイ・ハヴァーツ、MFロビン・ゴセンズの得点で突き放しにも成功。その後、1点を返されるが、4-2の勝利を収め、今大会初白星を手にした。

これで勝敗も1勝1敗の五分となり、突破の可能性を残して最終節に。2シャドーの一角としてフル出場のミュラーは試合後、決勝トーナメント進出を決められる状況を喜びつつ、23日に行われるハンガリー代表との最終節に慢心さを振り払って挑む必要性を主張した。
