試合中のトイレで脚光のダイアー、PK失敗の相手選手を慰めるスポーツマンシップ溢れる行動では“手洗い”が注目の的に!

29日に行われたカラバオカップ(EFLカップ)4回戦のトッテナムとチェルシーの一戦で、試合中にピッチを離れてトイレに駆け込んだことで、一躍注目を浴びることとなったトッテナムのイングランド代表DFエリック・ダイアーだが、試合後には素晴らしいスポーツマンシップを見せていた。

試合は白熱の攻防を見せ、90分間では決着が付かず、PK戦の末にトッテナムが勝利を飾っていたが、最後にPKを外してしまったのはチェルシーのイングランド代表MFメイソン・マウントだった。

マウントのPK失敗直後、多くのトッテナムの選手が勝利を喜び、守護神ウーゴ・ロリスの元に駆け寄る中、ダイアーは独りうなだれるマウントの元へ駆け寄り、抱きかかえながら慰めの言葉をかけていた。

スポーツマンシップに溢れる行動ではあるが、この行動をとったダイアーは他の選手とは違う心境だったと推測できる。ダイアーには苦い過去の思い出があるからだ。

その過去とは、2018-19シーズンのEFLカップ準決勝、チェルシーとトッテナムの2ndレグの試合だ。ホームでの1stレグを1-0と先勝していたトッテナムだが、スタンフォード・ブリッジでの2ndレグで1-2とされると、PK戦の末にチェルシーが勝利。その時にPKを外したのがダイアーとFWルーカス・モウラだった。

ダイアーが当時の自分とマウントの姿を重ね、こうした行動に至ったのだろうか。真相は分からないが、ダイアーの優しさにあふれる行動はSNSでも称賛されている。

また、良い話に水を差す格好にはなってしまうが、ダイアーが試合中にトイレに駆け込んでいたこともあり、マウントに言葉をかける際に手を洗っていたのかいないのかどうかも大きな論争を呼んでいる。
