シーズンを通して負傷に悩まされたマンチェスター・ユナイテッドのイングランド代表DFルーク・ショーは、2月のルートン・タウン戦でのプレーを悔やんでいる。『ESPN』が伝えている。
そういった中、ショーは「個人的にユナイテッドでプレーするために全力を尽くした」と反論。一方で、コンディションの問題を自覚しながらもプレーした末に負傷したルートン戦を深く後悔している。
ただ、自身の責任を認めながらも、プレーさせる決断を下したクラブのメディカルスタッフを非難するという、物議を醸すコメントを発した。
「あれは全員の責任だ。一部は自分のせい、一部は(ユナイテッドの)メディカルスタッフのせいだ。復帰が早すぎたせいで、ハムストリングをまた負傷してしまった」
また、イングランド代表では直前の親善試合2試合を欠場しており、16日に控える本大会初戦のセルビア代表戦に間に合うかは微妙な状況だ。
その点について問われると、「それは僕次第というわけではない。日々練習で調子を確かめるだけだ。初戦に出場したいけど、現実的にチャンスは1回しかなく、あまり急ぎたくない。何か感じたら、それで終わり。そんなことは起きてほしくない」と、あくまで万全を期して復帰する意向を示した。

今シーズンは開幕直後、年末年始、2月下旬以降と3度の負傷離脱を強いられ、公式戦15試合の出場にとどまったショー。現在は3カ月以上に渡って戦列を離れているものの、ガレス・サウスゲイト監督はリスク承知で28歳のユーロ2024招集を決断した。その招集の決断の責任は指揮官が負うべきものではあるが、クラブでほぼプレーしなかった状況で招集に応じたショーに対しては、クラブへの忠誠を疑うネガティブな声も挙がっている。ただ、自身の責任を認めながらも、プレーさせる決断を下したクラブのメディカルスタッフを非難するという、物議を醸すコメントを発した。
「監督がプレーを求めたら、絶対に『ノー』とは言えない。だけど、ルートン戦でプレーすべきではなかった」

イングランド代表落選の理由は?サウスゲイト監督がヘンダーソン&ラッシュフォードを語る「難しい決断だった」
