今後のキャリアが注目されるガレス・サウスゲイト氏

イングランド代表の前指揮官であるガレス・サウスゲイト氏が、今後のキャリアなどについての考えを述べた。

サウスゲイト氏はイングランド代表指揮官として、2018年、2022年のワールドカップ(W杯)、2021年、2024年のユーロと4つの大会でチームを指揮。いずれも安定した結果を残したがタイトルには一歩届かず、ユーロ2024も準優勝に終わったことで、7月にイングランドサッカー協会(FA)が退任を発表した。

まだ54歳と働き盛りであり、今後のキャリアが注目されるサウスゲイト氏。技術委員会常任メンバーの就任オファーを受諾したとも報じられるが、オファーがあれば指揮官の地位に戻る可能性が高いとされている。

そんな中で、イギリス『スカイ・スポーツ』のインタビューに応じたサウスゲイト氏は、イングランド代表での素晴らしい日々を振り返りつつ、今後のキャリアについては焦って決断を下すつもりはないと主張した。

「(イングランド代表退任は)変化を起こすのにちょうどいい時期だった。変化がもたらすことによる希望が見えてきていたんだ。私は満足しているよ。8年は長い時間であり、これから先もさまざまな課題に直面することを楽しみたい」

「信じられないほどの8年間を過ごしてきた。素晴らしい選手たちと一緒に仕事ができたことは光栄だ。我々には最後のピースが足りず、多くを成し遂げたが決勝で勝てれば完璧だったと思う。だが、チームはこれから成功し続けると確信しているよ」

「(今後について)何事も急ぐつもりはない。私にはたくさんのチャンスがあると思っている。フットボール内外で次に何が起こるか、オープンに考えていくつもりだ。今は少し時間を取ってリフレッシュし、そこから進んでいきたい」

「プレミアリーグのクラブとは何も話していない。誰もが、私は元気を取り戻して人生を楽しむ必要があると知っているんだ。急ぐつもりはなく、良い決断をする必要もある。私は多くの経験を楽しんでおり、慈善団体の支援もしたい。フットボール以外の機会にも、かなり興味があるんだ」

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
