カナダ代表のジョン・ハードマン監督が、日本代表戦を振り返った。カナダ『CTV News』が伝えた。

17日、カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)前の最後のテストマッチを行ったカナダと日本。試合は日本が相馬勇紀のゴールで前半に先制すると、カナダはCKの流れからスティーブン・ヴィトーリアが押し込み同点に追いつく。

後半はカナダが押し込みながらも決定機は迎えられず。逆に日本は選手交代、システム変更で流れを取り戻し、山根視来がポストを叩くシュート放つなどゴールに迫った。しかし、後半アディショナルタイムに山根がファウル。カナダはPKを獲得するとルーカス・カヴァリーニがしっかりと決めて土壇場で逆転。1-2で勝利を収めていた。

ハードマン監督は日本戦を振り返り、チームの自信が見えたとコメントした。

「結果を得ることは我々の自信にとって重要であり、勝つことはおまけのようなものだ」

「技術的に世界最高のチームの1つである日本に対し、チームがアイデンティティを示せるかを確認する必要があった。だから、今夜の私にとっては、本当のチームのパフォーマンスだった」

また、最後の最後で獲得したPKをパネンカ(チップキック)で決めたカヴァリーニについても言及。前回同じ形で失敗したにもかかわらず、再びそのチャレンジを行ったことを讃えた。

「ルーカス・カヴァリーニにはとても満足している。最後のその瞬間を掴み、パネンカをすることはとても勇気が必要だった。これが新たなカナダであることを示している」

「彼は前回パネンカをやった時、失敗していた。だから私は選手たちに言った『もしパネンカをやったら、大変なことになるぞ』とね。そしたら彼はやったんだ(笑)」

「でも、それは彼らに自信があるということを示している。この試合に入るメンタリティは、得点しなければいけなかったということだ」

「相手がどうなのかは心配していない。でも、ウルグアイとの試合ではゴールを決められなかった。だから、ガッカリしたと言ってあった」

「今夜はディフェンスの良さも見せたと思う。日本がポストを叩くシーンもあったが、厄介なことから免れた。運に任せるしかないし、相手もそうだったはずだ」

カナダはカタールW杯でグループFに入っており、23日にベルギー代表との初戦を迎える。

女子選手の意見を参考に配慮し白パンツを中止、ナイキが女子W杯出場13カ国の新ユニフォームを発表!

トランスジェンダーの選手として初のメダリストに、カナダ女子代表DFクインが決勝に挑む
