8日、バーミンガムはFAカップ4回戦でニューカッスルと対戦。惜しくも2-3で敗れた。

開始早々に先制するも、26分に逆転を許す展開。しかし40分、岩田が試合を振り出しに戻す貴重なゴールを決める。

左クロスが上がるとニューカッスルDFのクリアボールがボックス右手前へ。すかさず走り込んだ岩田が右足を振り抜き、強烈なダイレクトシュートがゴール右上に決まった。

終盤の失点で5回戦進出は逃したものの、EFLリーグ1(イングランド3部相当)のクラブがプレミアリーグの格上クラブ相手に大健闘。クリス・デイビス監督は試合後、「とても誇りに思っているし、選手たちにも大いに誇るべきだと言った」と述べ、岩田の同点ゴールにも言及した。地元メディアの『Birmingham Live』が伝えている。

「2点目のゴールは、どこから見たとしても素晴らしいゴールだ。数多くのトップゴールを生で見てきたが、あれは私にとって最高のゴールだ。信じられないシュートだった」

「時速73マイル(約117km/h)だったと誰かが言っていた。ボールが彼のもとにこぼれた時、シュートを打つと思ったはずだが、キーパーはノーチャンスだった。素晴らしいゴールだった」
