神戸のサンペール、別れ近づく偉大なる“先輩”イニエスタを語る「彼と競って苦しんだこともある」

ヴィッセル神戸のスペイン人MFセルジ・サンペールが、“先輩”元スペイン代表MFアンドレス・イニエスタについて語った。

世界屈指の名門クラブ・バルセロナのカンテラで育ったサンペール。ファーストチームでなかなかチャンスに巡り会えず、2019年3月に神戸へ移籍することとなったが、その神戸ではカンテラの先輩・イニエスタが攻撃のタクトを振るっており、古巣で叶わなかった夢の共演を日本で実現することとなった。しかし、イニエスタも在籍6年目の今シーズンは出場機会が激減し、とうとう7月1日の明治安田生命J1リーグ第19節・北海道コンサドーレ札幌戦を最後に退団することに。6日に国立競技場で行われるバルセロナとの親善試合を含めても、その勇姿を日本でお目にかかれる機会はあと6試合しかない。

サンペールは古巣・バルセロナ戦を前にし、スペイン『Relevo』のインタビューでイニエスタについて言及。改めてその偉大さを力説した。

「彼は素晴らしいキャリアを歩んでいるね。長年にわたって毎シーズンほとんどの試合でプレーし、大きなケガもそれほどなかった。とっても負けず嫌いなのさ。トレーニングセッションでは決して手を抜かないし、チームメイトは何もさせてもらえないんだ(笑)」

「結局のところ、僕は彼と同じポジションの選手だ。彼と真っ向から競い合っても、僕が選択肢になることはなかったよ(笑) この事実に苦しんだこともあるけど、彼の戦術理解、プレスのかけ方、チームを助けるアイデアを見れば、サッカーをパーフェクトに理解していることがよくわかる」

「ヴィッセル神戸の歴史だけでなく、日本サッカー全体にとってもアンドレス・イニエスタはレジェンドだ。彼が日本に来てスタジアムを満員にし始めたのは、彼が何者であるかをよく物語っている。尊敬に値するプレーヤーであり、神戸を去っても影響力を持ち続けるだろう」
