カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)でのラストマッチを勝利で終えたクロアチア代表が歓喜に沸いた。準決勝でアルゼンチン代表に敗れたクロアチアは、17日の3位決定戦でモロッコ代表と対戦。デザインされたセットプレーからヨシュコ・グヴァルディオルのヘディングで7分に先制し、直後に追い付かれはしたものの、42分にミスラフ・オルシッチが見事なコントロールショットを沈め、2-1で勝利を収めた。
1998年フランス大会の3位、前回のロシア大会準優勝に続き、優勝こそならなかったが、価値ある3位という結果に。出場した6大会のうち、入賞は3度目(残り3大会はグループステージ敗退)となった。

「史上最悪」「恥ずかしい」伝統の市松模様が史上最大サイズになったクロアチアの新ユニフォームには酷評の嵐「これ以上酷いものは見たことがない」
