試合は、立ち上がりに日本が攻め込むもクロアチアが主導権を握る展開に。それでも、43分に失点してしまう。
リードを許した状態で後半を迎えるが、55分にイバン・ペリシッチがヘディングシュートを決めて同点とする。
クロアチアは試合を支配しながらも、時折日本の反撃を受ける展開に。それでもゴールを許さずに延長戦に突入すると、30分間でゴールが生まれず、PK戦に突入した。
ダリッチ監督は「タフな試合だったが、クオリティが高く、よく戦えていたと思う。相手と同じようにだ」とコメント。「ベスト8に入ることは大変だ」と苦労したことを口にした。
また、「最初の30分はコントロールできていたが、途中でショートパスを奪われて日本にカウンター攻撃を受けてしまい、緊張が走った」と語り、「その後、久しぶりにアディショナルタイムで失点し、『気を引き締める』ことが必要になった」と、想定外の失点を前半にしたと明かした。
ショートパスを繋ぎながらも、背後のスペースを簡単に使うなど攻撃を見せていたクロアチア。ダリッチ監督は、日本の戦い方にハマらないように試合中に戦い方を変えたと語った。
「ショートパスはこれ以上必要なく、試合の中で裏へ飛ばす回数を増やすことにした。それを行うことで可能性のある状況を作り出していけた」

夫には早く引退してほしい!?モドリッチと妻の仲良しエピソード

「史上最悪」「恥ずかしい」伝統の市松模様が史上最大サイズになったクロアチアの新ユニフォームには酷評の嵐「これ以上酷いものは見たことがない」
