23日、カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)グループE第1節のスペイン代表vsコスタリカ代表が行われた。日本代表と同じグループに入ったスペイン。初戦の相手は世界屈指の守護神であるGKケイロル・ナバスのコスタリカが相手となった。

苦戦も予想された中、スペインの攻撃陣が爆発。前半だけで3点のリードを手にすると、後半に入ってもその得点力は落ちず。18歳のガビが豪快ボレーでW杯初ゴールを決めるなど、終わってみれば7-0の圧勝で初戦を終えた。

そのスペインだが、試合を前にして同じグループのドイツ代表と日本代表が対戦。ドイツが先制し優位に進めた中、日本が後半に堂安律と浅野拓磨のゴールで逆転勝利。大方の予想を覆す金星を手にした。

日本代表の勝利を知っているルイス・エンリケ監督は「日本がドイツに勝利したことは驚きだった」と率直な感想を述べ、今大会ではこうしたことが起きると語った。

「このW杯でそういった結果を見られたことは、ほとんど全ての国が、ダイナミックで、素晴らしく、激しい試合をしたからだ」

「日本はそれを示したと思う」

そのスペインは第2戦で27日にドイツ代表と戦う。勝利すれば、グループステージ突破が決定する可能性がある中、ルイス・エンリケ監督は、ドイツ戦にも自信を窺わせた。

「スペインには激しさ、強さ、モチベーションがあるので、良い予感がする。ドイツ戦では間違いなく同じかそれ以上の強さで戦うだろう」

「このチームがリラックスすることはない。先発のメンバーにも変化がある。重要なことをする準備ができている選手たちがいる」

リヨン&マルセイユがPSG時代終焉へ本気の200億円補強…ムバッペ流出に伴う放映権ダウンの影響受けず

21世紀の出場試合数ランキング発表! 首位は1145試合のC・ロナウド、トップ10に日本人選手がランクイン
