魔法はかけられず…英5部バーネットが“オズの魔法使い”キューウェルを7試合で解任

イングランド5部にあたるカンファレンス・ナショナルに所属するバーネットFCは20日、元オーストラリア代表FWのハリー・キューウェル監督の解任を発表した。

キューウェル氏は、現役時代にリーズ・ユナイテッドやリバプールでプレーし、リーズ時代の2001年にはバロンドールの候補にも選出。リバプール時代には、2004-05シーズンに“イスタンブールの奇跡”でも知られるチャンピオンズリーグ制覇を成し遂げ、2005-06シーズンにはFAカップも制した。

また、オーストラリア代表としても活躍。“オズの魔法使い”という異名をつけられるほど、テクニカルなプレーは高く評価されていた。

そのキューウェル氏は、現役引退後に監督キャリアをスタート。2015年にワトフォードU-23の監督に就任以降、クローリー・タウン、ノッツ・カウンティ、オールダムと下部リーグのチームを率い、今年6月からバーネットFCの監督に就任。ここまで公式戦7試合で指揮を執っていた。

しかし、開幕からバーネットは2分け5敗と未勝利。クラブはキューウェルを解任することを発表した。

フットボール部門長であるディーン・ブレナン氏は、クラブの公式サイトを通じて解任に至った経緯を説明している。

「ハリー・キューウェルがどれほどポジティブな影響を与えたいと考えていたかは明らかだったが、最終的には結果とシーズンのスタートの悪さが我々の決断を決定づけた。今シーズンの計画は、ーネットFCが上位に挑戦することであり、それは今でも我々の目標である」

また同クラブは、後任監督を探している間はディーン・ブレナン氏が一時的に指揮を執るとしている。

元豪州代表スピラノビッチが34歳で現役引退…かつて浦和所属のセンターバック

元オーストラリア代表DFのレイバット氏が遺体で発見…99年にベルマーレ平塚でプレー

ベルマーレ平塚でもプレーした元オーストラリア代表DFスティーブン・レイバットさん(46)が遺体で発見された。オーストラリア『シドニー・モーニング・ヘラルド』によると、レイバットさんは13日に家族から行方不明届が出されていたとのこと。12日に友人を訪ねるため、南東部シドニーから東部ブリスベン近郊のバイロン・ベイへ向かったものの、13日午前には家族と連絡が取れなくなっていたという。地元警察が大規模な捜索を行った結果、14日夜にバイロン・ベイからほど近いビーチ近くの低木林でレイバットさんの遺体が発見されたとのこと。現段階で死因や事件性の有無は公式には発表されていないものの、事件性は低いとみられている。レイバットさんは2000年のシドニー五輪にU-23オーストラリア代表として参加し、2000〜2004年にかけてはA代表で15試合出場。クラブキャリアでは1999年に短期間ながらもベルマーレ平塚(現:湘南ベルマーレ)でプレーし、オランダのフェイエノールト、ベルギーのヘントなどにも在籍経験を持つ。引退後は「現役時代にそんなことはできなかった」として2021年に同性愛をカミングアウト。同年には、病院のリハビリ病棟に勤務するなか、腎臓移植によって高齢男性の命を助けていた。レイバットさんの訃報を受け、元オーストラリア代表DFルーク・ウィルクシャー氏など、多くの関係者が哀悼の意をSNSなどで表明している。 2024.01.15 13:30 Mon
