インテル・マイアミのアルゼンチン代表FWリオネル・メッシが、パリ・オリンピック出場について言及した。
今シーズンはメジャーリーグ・サッカー(MLS)で12試合12ゴール9アシストと驚異的な数字を残しているメッシ。現在はコパ・アメリカに参加するためチームを離れ、アルゼンチン代表として連覇を目指す戦いに挑む。
一方で、7月からはパリ・オリンピックが開幕。アルゼンチンも出場し、2008年の北京オリンピック以来の金メダルを目指して戦うことになる。
指揮を執るのはバルセロナやアルゼンチン代表でチームメイトだったハビエル・マスチェラーノ監督。よく知る間柄だけに、メッシのパリ・オリンピック出場にも期待がかかったが、アルゼンチン『ESPN』でのインタビューで、出場はないとコメント。マスチェラーノ監督も理解していたと明かした。
「マスチェラーノと話したが、実際のところ、お互いに理解していたんだ」
36歳のメッシにとって、国を代表して2つの大会を続けて出場するのはフィジカル面を考えても難しいはずだ。
マスチェラーノ監督は、2004年のアテネ・オリンピックで金メダルを獲得。2008年の北京オリンピックにはオーバーエイジ(OA)としてメッシやセルヒオ・アグエロらと共に金メダルを獲得した。
メッシにとっては非常に良い思い出になっているようで、オリンピックの特別な位置付けについても語った。
「オリンピックに出場し、マスチェと一緒に優勝できたことは幸運だった。サッカーのレベルで素晴らしい経験だった。オリンピック、U-20と忘れられない思い出だよ」
「幸運にも、あれだけの経験を積むことができたのは素晴らしいことだ。オリンピックは特別なもので、参加する選手たちが僕と同じように楽しんでくれることを願っている。オリンピックは特別なもので、他の何とも違うんだ」

メッシと妻は30年来の仲、幼馴染の2人が結ばれW杯で優勝するまで

パリ五輪ベスト8が決定! 3連勝で首位通過の日本は準々決勝でスペインと激突
