25日に行われたプレミアリーグ第6節でマンチェスター・ユナイテッドのホームに乗り込んだビラは30本近くシュートを許したが、粘りの守りで最後のところで踏ん張り続け、88分に右CKのチャンスからこぼれ球をイングランド人DFコートニー・ホースが押し込み、先制。それが決勝点となり、今季初の連勝で勝ち点を「10」に伸ばした。

先制直後にホースのハンドでPKチャンスを献上したものの、ポルトガル代表MFブルーノ・フェルナンデスが外すという運にも恵まれ、大きな1勝を掴み取ったビラ。データ集計会社『Opta』によると、ビラがオールド・トラッフォードで勝利したのは2009年12月以来だという。スミス監督は試合後、妥当な結果だと振り返った。

「知っての通り、このスタジアムはビラファンも非常に多くの苦しみを味わう場所だが、ここ数年はもうちょっとのところまで迫った試合もあったと思う。周囲もそう思っていたはずだ。この試合での勝利を“大金星だ”とも言うだろうが、私からしたら、それ以上に見事なパフォーマンスぶりだった」

アストン・ビラがスタジアム改修をスタート、ユーロ2028の会場となり5万人収容に変貌へ

アストン・ビラがザニオーロの買い取りを見送る方針で一致か
