今夏に3年在籍したレアル・ソシエダを退団していたモンレアル。ここ数年は慢性的なヒザのケガに悩まされ、昨夏に再生治療を実施がクラブから発表されると、結局昨季は一度も公式戦に出られないまま、退団を迎えていた。
そして、そのヒザの問題と36歳という年齢から、モンレアルは引退を決断。インスタグラムを通じてフットボールに感謝の気持ちを送った。
「サッカーを始めて36年、そのうちプロとして16年。想像を絶するほど体を酷使し、限界に挑んできた。そんな私にこのヒザははっきりと『もう続けられない!』というメッセージを送ってきた」

6年半在籍したアーセナルでは、通算251試合10ゴール20アシストを記録。3度のFAカップ優勝と、同じく3度のコミュニティ・シールド制覇に貢献した。
そして、2019年夏に加入したソシエダでは通算69試合の出場に。加入から2年は主力として活躍したものの、前述のように昨季の出場はゼロ。契約満了をもってクラブを退団していた。
