フェルマーレン氏はアーセナルやバルセロナなどで活躍したのち、2021年にヴィッセル神戸で現役引退。引退直後にはカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)へ向けた準備を進めるベルギー代表チームのコーチに就任した。
同代表はロシアW杯で3位に輝き、カタールW杯でも優勝候補と目されたが、結果はあえなくグループステージ敗退。ロベルト・マルティネス監督は退任し、今月8日にティエリ・アンリ氏のコーチ退任も発表された。
フェルマーレン氏もこれに続く格好だが、ドメニコ・デデスコ新監督が自ら呼び寄せたコーチ陣で固めることにこだわっているようで、近日中に「組閣」が完了すると地元メディアのインタビューで語った。
一方でベルギーサッカー協会(KBVB)はフェルマーレン氏の留任を希望。最終的にはデデスコ新監督の意向が反映されそうとのことだが、現在も両者による会談が続いているとされる。

日本で引退の名手フェルマーレン氏、刷新図る古巣アヤックスのリザーブチームで指揮官就任か
