イングランド代表主将のケインがW杯にかける「開幕に向けて準備を」

UEFAネーションズリーグ(UNL)の戦いぶりから暗い影を落とすイングランド代表だが、キャプテンのFWハリー・ケインがカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)にかける思いを口にした。

UNLのグループステージで5試合を消化して1つも勝てず、最終節を残して最下位で次回から屈辱のリーグB降格が決まったイングランド。今活動のメンバー選考から批判に晒されるガレス・サウスゲイト監督にさらに厳しい目が向くなか、26日の最終節でドイツ代表をホームに迎え撃った。

0-0で入った後半に0-2まで追い詰められたイングランドだったが、5試合を戦ってわずか1得点の攻撃面が活性化して、83分までに3ゴールを奪い切って逆転に成功。だが、87分にミス絡みの失点で追いつかれ、3-3で決した。

結局、勝てなかったが、ケインは3ゴールの攻撃面に希望の光を感じているようだ。イギリス『デイリー・メール』によれば、試合後に『Channel 4』でこう振り返り、W杯に向けたコメントも残したという。

「選手たちに最近の結果でプレッシャーがあったし、誰もが正しさを証明しようとここに来た。自分たちのミスから教訓とすべきことはまだあるけど、3つのゴールはW杯に向けてポジティブな気持ちになれるものだと感じる」

「W杯の開幕に向けて準備をしなくちゃね。イングランド代表としてプレーするメジャートーナメントのフットボールはほかと異なる。プレッシャーは強いし、集中力も求められる。僕らなら、うまく対応できると思っている」

「ウェンブリーでのドイツ戦なら、どんな大会でもビッグゲームになる。過去2つの主要大会では試合を重ねて自分たちの力を高められた。埃まみれになって改善しないといけないけど、(W杯の)初戦までそんなに時間がない」

「それぞれが所属先でフィットして、より強くなり、11月に戻ってくる準備が整っているのを願っている」

相手が恐れる右手…ストライカーの完成形と呼ばれた男、アラン・シアラー

元ユナイテッドSDがFAに復帰…新設のチーフ・フットボール・オフィサーに就任

ブリッジは“不倫男”テリーを未だに許さず? 自身の近くに引っ越し発覚後、自宅を売却に出す
