豪州の英雄キューウェルがセルティックのコーチ陣入りへ

元オーストラリア代表FWのハリー・キューウェル氏(43)が今季のスコティッシュ・プレミアシップとリーグカップを制したセルティックのコーチングスタッフ陣に加わるようだ。

現役時代にリーズ・ユナイテッドやリバプールでもプレーし、オーストラリア代表としても58キャップを誇るキューウェル氏。2014年夏に現役を退いてからは指導者の道を選び、イングランドの下部リーグを中心にチームの監督を歴任している。

昨年6月からはナショナルリーグ(5部相当)のバーネットを率いたが、同年9月に解任。それからというものフリーが続くなか、イギリス『スカイ・スポーツ』によると、セルティックにトップチームのコーチとして加わる見通しだというのだ。

そんなセルティックを率いるのはかつてオーストラリア代表も率いたアンジェ・ポステコグルー監督で、アシスタントのジョン・ケネディ氏をはじめ、スティーブン・マクマナス氏、ギャビン・ストラカン氏、スティービー・ウッズ氏でコーチ陣を形成する。

以前、「アンジの話で心に残っているのは我が道を行けという言葉」とポステコグルー監督からのアドバイスを明かしているキューウェル氏。その師の下で指導者の腕を磨けるとなれば、自身にとってもまたとない機会となりそうだ。

「なんとか取り戻したい」9月以来の日本代表活動の前田大然、高校の先輩・渡辺剛との初活動は「2人で活躍したい」
