ユーロでの快進撃に実感が湧いていないライス「引退するまでは…」

ユーロ2020での活躍が印象的なイングランド代表MFデクラン・ライスだが、まだその実感が湧いていないようだ。

今大会のイングランド代表は、グループDを2勝1分けで首位通過すると、ラウンド16で宿敵ドイツ代表を下して2大会ぶりの8強入り。その勢いは止まることなく、準々決勝ではウクライナ代表に4-0で快勝してベスト4進出を決めている。

国際舞台においてなかなか日の目を浴びてこなかったイングランドにとって、なかなかどうしてベスト4進出は快進撃と言える。ことユーロに関しては1968年大会の3位が最高位であるため、初の決勝進出に向けて国民の期待はかなり高い。

しかしながら、ここまで全試合に出場しているウェストハムの22歳は、その実感を持てていないようだ。イングランド代表の公式Podcastでコメントした。

「まだ実感が湧かないんだ。大会が終わってもそうだと思う。おそらくキャリアが終わるまでかかるかもしれない」

「先走りしたくはないけど、先に何があるのかはわかっている。大きな夢を果たせることを願っているよ」

また、イングランド代表がドイツに勝利した後、自身の携帯電話にメッセージが殺到したとも話している。

「ドイツ戦の後、携帯電話の電源を入れたらWhatsApp(メッセージアプリ)に197件のメッセージがあったんだ。全員に返信するのに3、4日かかったよ」

「母とも話をして『まだメッセージを読んでいないんだ』と伝えると、『一番に返信しなさいよ!』と言われてしまったよ。チームメイトみんなの携帯電話がパンクしていた。初めての国際大会だけど、本当にクレイジーな状況だね」

ライスがチェルシーアカデミーからの放出を回想…「大きな失望」

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
