ロシア・ワールドカップのグループDのアルゼンチンは、初戦で初出場のアイスランドと1-1で引き分け、第2節ではクロアチアに0-3で完敗。決勝トーナメント進出へ向けて最終節に望みをつなぐが、順位表で最下位に沈んでいる。66歳のイタリア人指揮官ラニエリ氏は、自身の見解を示し、アイスランド戦でPKを外すなど、本来の輝きを見せることができていないFWリオネル・メッシを擁護した。
「選手たちがチームを作る。良い選手が揃っていれば、代表も素晴らしい成績を残せるだろう。現在のアルゼンチンの選手層には驚く。私の印象では、W杯において、トップ4もしくはトップ6に入れるメンバーではない。メッシがたった一人でリーダーを担うことはできない。代表は代償を払っている」
続いて結果を出せずにいるアルゼンチン代表について、指揮官ホルヘ・サンパオリが責任を負うことは当然であると主張する。
「サンパオリは権威を失った? チームは勝利に飢え、緊張感がある。最初に代償を払うのはいつでも監督なんだ。悲嘆に暮れたメッシはピッチをさまよう。そうなれば監督の権威は落ち、批判される。選手とは非常に敏感なものだ。能力の120%を出してくれることもあれば、60%のときもある。後者の場合、チームは立ち行かない」
またラニエリ氏は、セリエAで29ゴールを挙げ、得点王に輝いたインテルFWマウロ・イカルディが招集されなかったことに疑問を呈した。

直近3試合出番なしのローマMFパレデス、序列低下の理由はパフォーマンスにあらず?

ボローニャがミハイロビッチ監督を解任…白血病と闘いながら3年半指揮も今季開幕5戦未勝利

セリエA未勝利が続くサンプドリアがジャンパオロ監督を解任…後任はラニエリ氏が有力か

メッシと妻は30年来の仲、幼馴染の2人が結ばれW杯で優勝するまで

メッシ 大好きなマテ茶のストローは7万円超えの特別仕様

54歳バティストゥータ氏がチャリティーマッチでゴール!4年前には左足首を人工関節に置換
