日本代表としてアジアカップ2023を戦っていた守田。優勝候補筆頭と見られ、大きな期待が寄せられていた日本だったが、グループステージから苦戦が続くと、準々決勝でイラン代表に敗れて敗退となっていた。

期待外れの結果に終わったことで、様々な意見が出る中、試合後の取材での守田の発言が大きな話題に。森保一監督批判という形でも報じられるなどし、大きな注目を集めることとなった。

言葉だけが切り取られると、様々な捉え方がなされ、要らぬ憶測も出てくる世界だが、守田は自身の発言についてX(旧ツイッター)で言及。「後悔はしていない」と、自身の言葉について綴り、日本代表、日本サッカーをさらに良くするための発言だと意図を説明した。

森保ジャパンはワールドカップ(W杯)優勝を目標に掲げ、史上初となる8年間の指揮に向け、カタールW杯後に続投が決定。2023年は3月こそ結果が出なかったが、その後の試合では全勝を収め、アウェイでドイツ代表やトルコ代表に勝利したことも話題となっていた。

高い目標を掲げ、選手個々も高いレベルで日常的にプレーしている中、期待が最高潮に高まったアジアカップでの惨敗。批判を受けるのも仕方ないが、その先にある目標を諦めるはずもなく、さらに成長し続けていくしかないだろう。

C・ロナウドに最大限のリスペクト!守田英正のスポルティングCPが本拠地開場20周年を記念した3rdユニフォームを発表

水頭症の治療も及ばず他界した工藤壮人に古巣が追悼…カナダからもメッセージ「一番辛い仕事」、「信じられません」
