この試合ではカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)のメンバーから外れたMF旗手怜央、FW古橋亨梧が先発した。一方、日本代表入りしているFW前田大然はベンチスタート。80分から出場した。

試合はアウェイのセルティックが押し込む展開に。それでも開始早々に、ビルドアップのミスから相手にカウンターを受け、GKのジョー・ハートもかわされるビッグチャンスを相手に与えたが、シュートミスに救われる。

すると迎えた15分、相手ボックス内でマット・オライリーがボール奪取。そのままグラウンダーのクロスを送ると、古橋が押しこみ先制に成功。古橋は3試合連続ゴールと、ここに来て調子を上げている。

セルティックが1点リードで試合を折り返すと、後半には古橋の絶妙なロングスルーパスに逆サイドのジョタが反応。GKとの一対一をループシュートで冷静に決めるが、これはVARチェックによりわずかながらオフサイドを取られてしまう。

得点がなかなか増えないセルティックだったが、80分に入った前田がダメ押し。84分、カウンターを仕掛ける中、取り消されたジョタのゴールとほぼ同じ形でデイビッド・ターンブルからのフィードをトップスピードで左サイドを駆け上がる前田がトラップ。これで相手を置き去りにし、冷静にコースを狙って沈めて追加点。86分に1点を返されるが、1-2で逃げ切り勝利。日本人2人が揃ってゴールを決め、勝利に貢献した。

色褪せない中村俊輔のFK、セルティックが15年前のユナイテッド戦を回顧「これほど感動したゴールはない」
