ガーナ代表FWアサモア・ギャンが2010年の南アフリカ・ワールドカップ(W杯)でのPK失敗について語った。イギリス『デイリー・メール』が伝えている。
ギャンもプレーしたガーナ代表は、南アフリカW杯で躍進。セルビア代表、オーストラリア代表、ドイツ代表と同居したグループステージを勝ち上がると、ラウンド16でアメリカ代表を延長の末に下し、ベスト8へ進出した。

ベスト8ではウルグアイ代表と対戦すると、1-1で迎えた延長後半終了間際にウルグアイ代表FW ルイス・スアレスが手を使ってストップ。スアレスは一発退場となり、ガーナがPKを獲得した。
これを決めればアフリカ勢初となるW杯ベスト4進出となる状況だったが、PKキッカーのギャンのシュートは無情にもクロスバーを叩き失敗。その後のPK戦でガーナは敗れ、ベスト8で敗退していた。
ガーナのテレビ局『TV3ガーナ』のインタビューに応えたギャンは、当時を振り返り、今でもこの記憶が脳裏に焼き付いていると明かした。
「今でも1人になると脳裏に浮かぶよ」
「時々、世界の時間が巻き戻って、あの瞬間をやり直せればと感じることがある。だけど、この記憶は僕の人生で一生背負っていかなければならないことを理解しているよ」
「この過去について、僕にできることは何もない。だから受け入れている。母国を救うためにあの場所に立ったが、悪役になってしまった。このことはもう受け入れたよ。人々がどのように感じるか理解しているからね」
また、この試合の次の日の様子についても振り返り、一晩中泣いたことを明かした。
「あれは悲劇だった、クレイジーだったよ。僕は逆に落ち着いていた。なぜなら、僕は一晩中泣いていて一睡もしなかったからだ。僕はもう泣くことができず、なぜが落ち着いていたんだ」
しかし、ギャンはこの悲劇を経ても前を向いているようだ。一度は代表引退を発表するもすぐに撤回。汚名を返上すべく、心の炎を燃やしているようだ。
「ずっと自分に言い聞かせていたのは、次のチャンスを得ることだった。自分が汚名を返上できると分かっていたからね。必ずしもフットボールを通してではなく、他の何かでもそうすることができると。例えば僕はできなくても、いつか僕の子どもたちがやってくれるだろう」
「人々は僕に引退して欲しいと思っているみたいだが、僕はまだ終わってない」
「ガーナ代表で何も勝ち取っていないことを僕は許せない。だからそれを達成したいよ」
「多くの人が僕を引退させようとしてきたが、いつだって辞める日を決めるのは自分自身だと言い聞かせてきた。誰も僕を引退には追い込めないよ」

何年経っても想いは褪せないようだ。ウルグアイ代表FWルイス・スアレスが妻、ソフィア・バルビさんへバースデーメッセージを送った。
10代で出会い、2009年に結婚した2人は、現在2人の息子と1人の娘という3人の子供を授かっている。
スアレスは妻の誕生日の翌日、11日にインスタグラムを更新。バルビさんのツーショットや家族の集合写真とともに、甘いメッセージを綴った。

ウルグアイサッカー連盟(AUF)が、ウルグアイ代表の新ユニフォームを発表している。
2024年初頭にプーマとのユニフォームサプライヤー契約が終了したウルグアイ。新たなユニフォームサプライヤーとの契約はまだ結ばれておらず、今回の新ユニフォームもサプライヤーなしでの製作となった。
その新ユニフォームには、男女平等のための戦いに貢献するという目的もあり、3月8日の国際女性デーの枠組みから、ユニフォームの一部に女性に対する暴力根絶のシンボルであるパープルリボンにちなんだ紫色が取り入れられ、「8M」のロゴもあしらわれている。
AUFがこの「8M」のロゴを用いたユニフォームを製作したのは史上初のことであり、23日にバスク代表と、26日にコートジボワール代表と対戦する男子チームの選手たちの試合でお披露目となるということだ。
6月に開幕するコパ・アメリカ2024にも出場するウルグアイだが、このユニフォームを同大会で着用するかどうかは不明だ。

元ウルグアイ代表FWディエゴ・フォルランが再デビュー戦で華麗なゴールを決めた。
マンチェスター・ユナイテッドやビジャレアル、アトレティコ・マドリーで活躍したフォルランは、2014年1月にはセレッソ大阪へ入団し、日本でも大きな話題となった。
その後はインドや香港にも活躍の場を広げたのち、2019年8月に引退。ウルグアイ代表としても112試合36ゴールを記録したレジェンドは、2020年から母国の古巣ペニャロールや同国2部リーグのアテナスで監督業をスタートさせたが、昨年9月にアテナスの監督を解任されていた。
そのフォルランは、今年2月にはウルグアイのオールド・ボーイズ&オールド・ガールズ・クラブへの入団が発表。所属するのは40歳以上の選手で構成されるサッカーチームで、リガ・ウニベルシタリア・デ・デポルテスが運営するウルグアイ大学スポーツリーグ(LUD)と呼ばれるリーグ戦を戦う。
23日についにリーグ戦デビューを果たした南アフリカ・ワールドカップ(W杯)得点王は、いきなり見せた。左CKのキッカーを任されたフォルランは、力みのないキックでこれを直接沈めてみせたのだ。
さすがに技量にはファンからも「天才」、「色褪せない魔法」、「フォルランはフォルランであった」、「50まではできる」、「待て待て、いきなりディエゴ・フォルランと対戦することを想像してみろよ」、「フォルランがアマチュアサッカーなんて完全に違法だろ」といった声が届けられている。
フォルランは直接CKを含む2ゴールを挙げ、試合も10-0と圧勝。42歳となった今でも、まだまだファンタスティックなゴールを挙げそうな雰囲気だ。
