イングランド代表の守護神ジョーダン・ピックフォードが、2大会連続でのユーロ決勝での敗退後に指揮官を擁護した。
14日、ユーロ2024決勝が行われ、イングランド代表はスペイン代表と対戦した。イタリア代表の前に屈した前回大会に続き1-2の敗戦を喫し、悲願の欧州初制覇を逃した。
今大会ではスイス代表とのラウンド16でPK戦勝利の立役者となるなど、守護神として全試合に出場し、準優勝に貢献したピックフォード。
試合直後のイギリス『ITV』のフラッシュインタビューでは「本当に言葉がないよ。ただ、全力を尽くした」とエモーショナルな態度で試合を振り返った。
また、今大会では優勝候補に挙がりながらも、開幕前の選手選考や用兵の部分で批判を受けていたガレス・サウスゲイト監督に対して、出場国トップクラスのタレントを活かし切れなかったという部分で、今大会での退任を望む声も挙がっている。
だが、守護神は「彼は史上最高のイングランド代表監督」との擁護の言葉と共に、続投を支持した。

元ユナイテッドSDがFAに復帰…新設のチーフ・フットボール・オフィサーに就任
元マンチェスター・ユナイテッドのスポーツディレクター(SD)、ダン・アシュワース氏が、イングランドサッカー協会(FA)に復帰することになった。 FAは14日、アシュワース氏が新設のチーフ・フットボール・オフィサーに就任すると発表。同職ではイングランド代表の男女チームと緊密に連携していくことになるという。 昨年12月にユナイテッドのSDをわずか5カ月で退任したアシュワース氏。それ以前にはブライトン&ホーヴ・アルビオン、ニューカッスルで手腕を発揮しており、国内外のクラブからのオファーも想定されていたが、2018年まで6年間に渡って勤務していたFAに復帰することになった。 アシュワース氏は、セント・ジョージズ・パークの再開発を監督し、2028年に開催されるユーロ2028の共催に向け、競技施設とピッチの改善を目指す。 さらに、この新役職は、男子フットボールのテクニカルディレクターであるジョン・マクダーモット氏と緊密に連携するとともに、FAの最高経営責任者(CEO)であるマーク・ブリンガム氏とも連携する。 また、イングランド国内の地元出身のコーチの育成にも携わる予定だという。 2025.05.15 16:30 Thu

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
