日本人離れしたメンタリティが露わになった。15日、AFC U20アジアカップの準決勝でU-20イラク代表と対戦したU-20日本代表。すでに3大会連続となるU-20ワールドカップの出場権を掴んだ日本は、メンバーを大きく変えて臨んだ。
しかし、12分にセットプレーから失点。後半開始から松木玖生、永長鷹虎、熊田直紀を投入すると、83分に永長のゴールで同点に。延長戦へともつれ込むと、103分に勝ち越しを許すも118分に熊田のゴールで再び追いつく。だが、PK戦では2人目の佐野航大が外し、全員が決めたイラクに敗れた。
最終的に試合を決めることになったのは、佐野のPK失敗。佐野は相手GKのタイミングをずらす独特なステップからキックを放ったが、惑わされなかったGKの正面を突いてしまった。この蹴り方は佐野が米子北高校時代から続けているもので、グループステージのU-20キルギス代表戦でも同じ蹴り方で成功していたが、この日は止められた。
PKを失敗した佐野は思わず頭を抱えたが、その表情は笑顔。落ち込むわけではなく、「やっちまった」と言わんばかりの表情だった。誤解を招く可能性もある笑顔だったが、心の中では間違いなく悔しさを感じていたはずだ。SNS上でも「将来絶対に大成すると思ったよ」、「PK外して落ち込まずに笑っていられるメンタリティ」、「うまく切り替えが出来てる感じ」、「悔しいはずなのに」とそのメンタリティに驚きの声が上がっていた。

日本はイラクに敗れベスト4で敗退となり、2大会ぶりのアジア王者には届かなかったが、5月から6月にかけて行われるU-20W杯本大会でこの悔しさを晴らしてもらいたい。

NECナイメヘンは21日、MF佐野航大の負傷を発表した。

「とても素敵」小川航基がモデルに起用!日本人選手2人所属のNECナイメヘンが新ユニフォームを発表「かっこいい」

BE:FIRSTがアンバサダー就任の「FILA」、かつては中田英寿氏も同ブランドのスパイクを着用

21世紀の出場試合数ランキング発表! 首位は1145試合のC・ロナウド、トップ10に日本人選手がランクイン

「まさに死闘ってカンジ」歴史に残るバーレーンとの4-3の激闘!2004年大会プレイバックに反響「このゴールで中澤佑二に惚れた」
