ドルトムントのアメリカ代表MFジョバンニ・レイナが機動隊に囲まれた。

ドルトムントの育成組織からトップチームへと駆け上がったことから『クリスチャン・プリシッチの再来』とも形容されるレイナ。現地時間の2日、アメリカ代表としてカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)北中米カリブ海最終予選第1節のエルサルバドル代表戦とのアウェイゲームにスタメンで出場した。ブンデスリーガでもバイエルン戦やRBライプツィヒ戦など、難しいアウェイゲームを戦ってきたレイナだが、今回ばかりは少々毛色が異なったようだ。

CKを得ると、レイナはキッカーとしてフラッグへと向かう。すると、アウェイの選手の安全を確保するためか、シールドを持った機動隊員が肩が触れそうな距離にまで集結。物々しい雰囲気には、さすがのレイナも驚きの表情を示した。

収容人数5万3000人を誇る中央アメリカ最大のスタジアムであるエルサルバドルのエスタディオ・クスカトランは、アウェイチームにとって威圧的な雰囲気を作り出す。その影響もあってか、アメリカは最後までゴールを奪うことができず、0-0の引き分けに。18歳の青年にとっても初めてのW杯予選は、過酷な遠征となったようだ。

なお、アメリカは続く5日の第2節、ホームでのカナダ代表戦も1-1のドローに終わった。2大会ぶりの本大会出場に向けて厳しい船出となっている。

アメリカ代表FWアルティドールが2017年テニス全米オープン王者のスティーブンスと婚約
