ドイツ代表は3月31日、カタール・ワールドカップ欧州予選で北マケドニア代表と対戦。相手は格下と思われていたものの、なかなか得点できないドイツは前半のアディショナルタイムにFWゴラン・パンデフのゴールで失点してしまう。

それでも62分に獲得したPKをMFイルカイ・ギュンドアンが決めて同点に。そして迎えた80分、味方のスルーパスでボックス左に抜け出したギュンドアンの折り返しからヴェルナーに決定機。目の前にはGKただ一人。あとは流し込むだけだったが、左足で合わせにいったシュートはまさかの空振り。逆転のビッグチャンスを逃してしまった。加えてその後、ドイツは85分に2失点目を喫し、FIFAランク63位の北マケドニアに金星を許す結果に。

今シーズンからチェルシーでプレーするヴェルナーは、スタイルが合わないのかゴール数が伸び悩んでおり、今回のように決定機を外してしまうことも珍しくない。ゴールを量産していたライプツィヒ在籍時代から、代表でのゴール数はそれほど多くはないものの、クラブでの不振が影響していると思われても仕方のない凡ミスだ。

ヨアヒム・レーブ監督は試合後、ドイツ『RTL』のマイクで「彼はしっかりゴールに納めなければならなかった。このチームでやってきたようにね」と言及し、エースのミスに無念の意を示した。

そんなヴェルナーは今後、チェルシーに戻って残りわずかとなったリーグ戦とチャンピオンズリーグに臨む。果たして汚名返上の活躍を見せることはできるだろうか。

チェルシー、チアゴ・シウバ加入を公式発表! 「栄誉をもたらすという挑戦のため、ここに来た」
