長年にわたり、アーセナルの司令塔に君臨してきたエジルだが、2019年12月から指揮を執るミケル・アルテタ監督の信頼を掴めず、今季に入ると、プレミアリーグとヨーロッパリーグ(EL)の登録メンバーからも外され、完全なる構想外に。自身がファンであるのを公言するフェネルバフチェや、アメリカのDCユナイテッドといったクラブが移籍先候補として取り沙汰されている。
そんなエジルが自身のツイッター(@MesutOzil1088)を介して、ファンとのQ&Aを実施。「なぜフェネルバフチェを好きになり、ファンになったのはどうして?」という質問に対して、自身のルーツが関係していると語った。
「僕はドイツで、子供の頃からフェネルバフチェのファンとして育った。ドイツ系トルコ人は皆、ドイツで育つと、トルコのチームを応援する。僕の場合はそれがフェネルバフチェだったんだ。フェネルバフチェはスペインのレアル・マドリーのようなものなんだ。国内最大のクラブだよ」
また「アーセナルでプレーするのは楽しい?」という質問にも「もちろんだよ」と返答。良いプレーをできていたが、昨シーズンの新型コロナウイルス流行による中断期間で多くが変わってしまったと語った。
「そして正直なところ、去年2月と3月のコロナブレイク前最後の2、3試合は本当に楽しかった。しかし、コロナブレイク後は残念ながら状況が変わってしまったんだ」

エジル氏が旧知のエルドアン大統領の後ろ盾でトルコの政界に進出

ガブリエウとヘンダーソン口論、FAは不問に…「申告された疑惑の発言は確認されなかった」
