2023-24シーズンのカンファレンスリーグ(ECL)・グループステージが21日に開幕する。創設3年目を迎えるチャンピオンズリーグ(CL)、ヨーロッパリーグ(EL)に次ぐUEFA3番目のコンペティションには日本人6選手が参戦。また、昨シーズンのファイナリストであるフィオレンティーナやアストン・ビラといった4大リーグのクラブが出場する。
ここでは、日本人選手の所属するクラブ、注目クラブを中心にグループステージを展望していきたい。
◆昨季から大幅増の日本人6選手が参戦!
昨季のグループステージはAZのDF菅原由勢が唯一の出場選手だったが、今季はその菅原を含め6人の日本人選手が参戦する。
グループGではMF長谷部誠を擁するフランクフルトと、MF田中亜土夢を擁するヘルシンキの日本人対決が実現。昨季限りでの現役引退の可能性が報じられながらも、今季も現役続行を選択した39歳MFは今季の公式戦初戦となったDFBポカール1回戦でフル出場し健在ぶりを発揮。以降は体調不良の影響などもありベンチを温める機会が増えているが、過密日程に突入する中、自身初のECLで出番が与えられる可能性は十分にありそうだ。
一方、ヘルシンキの重鎮となった35歳MFは今季ここまでの公式戦6試合に出場しており、こちらも健在ぶりを発揮。先発でも途中投入でも自身のやるべき仕事を把握するプレーメーカーは、今大会でも虎視眈々と出場機会を窺う。
KVコルトレイクでの活躍を経て今夏ヘントへステップアップを果たしたDF渡辺剛は、マッカビ・テル・アビブ、ゾリャとヨーロッパの常連らと同居したグループBで初のECLの戦いに臨む。新天地では開幕から全試合に出場し、早くもディフェンスラインの主軸として活躍。今大会でも攻守両面での活躍が期待される。
同じベルギー勢のクラブ・ブルージュに所属するMF本間至恩は、強豪ベシクタシュ、ボデ/グリムトと同居した厳しいグループでECLデビューを目指す。昨夏の加入以降、セカンドチームが主戦場となっているが、ファーストチームでも通算3試合に出場し1ゴール1アシストを記録。今季はECL予選1試合の出場にとどまっており、ファーストチームで出番を得るのは至難の業と言えるが、何とかセカンドチームでアピールして出場機会を得たい。
今夏、コンサドーレ札幌からクロアチア屈指の名門ディナモ・ザグレブに加入したMF金子拓郎も、本間同様にチーム内のポジション争いを制してECLデビューを目指す選手の一人だ。加入当初は3試合に出場したものの、以降の公式戦4試合ではプレー機会を得られず、新天地で最初の壁にぶち当たっている。グループCはバルカニを除きビクトリア・プルゼニ、アスタナと欧州の常連クラブでディナモ・ザグレブとしても気の抜けない相手となっており、ECLデビューに向けてはチーム内での競争を制する必要がある。
日本人選手所属クラブ以外では昨季準優勝のフィオレンティーナ、スカッドの質で優勝候補と目されるアストン・ビラ、ベシクタシュ、フェネルバフチェ、リール辺りが注目のクラブとなる。
アストン・ビラはELマイスターの異名を持つウナイ・エメリ監督の存在に加え、GKマルティネスを始めDFパウ・ロペス、MFティーレマンス、MFザニオーロ、FWディアビ、FWワトキンスら強烈なタレントが在籍しており、現時点では優勝候補筆頭と目される。
