2014年9月にポルトガル代表の指揮官に就任したサントス監督は、2016年に同国史上初のユーロ優勝に導くと、2019年にはUEFAネーションズリーグ初代王者に輝き、8年間の指揮で2つのビッグタイトルを母国ポルトガルにもたらしていた。
カタール・ワールドカップでは優勝候補に挙げられていたが、準々決勝でモロッコ代表の前に敗退。試合直後には｢サイクルの終焉｣と話し、辞任を示唆していた。2024年まで契約が残っていたサントス監督だったが、FPFとの友好的な合意により指揮官辞任となった。
なお、後任には現在ローマを率いるジョゼ・モウリーニョ監督の就任が濃厚とのこと。FPFは二足の草鞋を容認する姿勢だと報じられている。

21世紀の出場試合数ランキング発表! 首位は1145試合のC・ロナウド、トップ10に日本人選手がランクイン
