クロアチアは13日に行われたカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)準決勝で、アルゼンチン代表と対戦した。

前半はボールを握りながらリードを奪えない時間帯が続くと、終盤にPKとカウンターから2失点。後半は反撃のため攻勢を強めるもチャンスを活かすことができず、逆に3点目を決められ万事休す。その後も最後まで相手のゴールネットを揺らすことはできず、0-3で敗れた。
2大会連続のW杯決勝進出を逃したクロアチア。試合後にMFルカ・モドリッチらの世代の終わりを認めたダリッチ監督は、ユーロへの意気込みを語った。

「おそらく今の世代がW杯でプレーするのは最後だろう。選手たちはベテランとなり、2026年の大会で何が起こるか見なければならない。それでも、我々には素晴らしいチームがあり、この世代はユーロ2024でキャリアを終えるはずだ」
「私の契約は2024年まで残っているのだから、仕事を続けるつもりだ。これからネーションズリーグやW杯予選もある。今の私のプランや目標は、クロアチアを2024年のユーロに連れて行くこととなる」
