8度目のW杯取材中に命を落としたグラント・ウォール氏

激闘が続くカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)の裏で、悲しい出来事が起こっていた。

アメリカ合衆国サッカー連盟(USSF)は9日、著名なサッカージャーナリストのグラント・ウォール氏が、W杯の取材中に他界したことを発表した。

ウォール氏は、9日に行われた準々決勝のオランダ代表vsアルゼンチン代表の試合を取材していたとのこと。しかし、取材中に倒れ、救急隊員が呼ばれたものの、蘇生できず。近くの病院に運ばれたが、そのまま帰らぬ人となった。

USSFは今回の訃報を受け、声明を発表している。

「アメリカのサッカーファミリー全員がグラント・ウォールを失ったことを知り、心を痛めています」

「チーム、選手、監督、そしてサッカーを他のスポーツとは異なるものにしている多くの個性について、サッカーとその主役たちについての洞察に満ちた楽しいストーリーを提供してくれたグラントには、サッカーと最高クオリティのジャーナリズムのファンであれば、いつでも期待することができると思っていました」

「アメリカでは、グラントのサッカーへの情熱と、スポーツ界全体におけるサッカーの知名度向上への取り組みが、この美しい試合への関心を敬意を高める上で大きな役割を果たしていました」

ウォール氏は8日に自身の体調についてSpotifyのポッドキャストで言及。W杯の取材中に気管支炎にかかったとのことで、「少し休むことにした」と語っていた。

「ここ2日間、試合がない休みがあった。17日連続で試合があり、体がアメリカを出発した時にも『おい、寝不足だぞ』と言って、僕に反抗してきたんだと思う」

「だから今週、気管支炎になってしまったんだ。今日を含めて、2回医療センターに行ってきた。今日は調子が良い」

「木曜日は、予定されていたものを基本的に全てキャンセルして、昼寝をしたからか、少し良くなってきた。この声では100%ではないことが分かるだろう」

サッカーを愛し、W杯を愛したウォール氏。今大会が8度目のW杯取材。元ブラジル代表FWロナウド氏から、W杯のレプリカトロフィーを受け取り表彰されていた。また、大会中の12月2日に48歳の誕生日を迎えたばかりだった。

「壮大で記憶に残る」ナイキのPVでムバッペvsロナウジーニョが実現!豪炎寺修也も登場で海外ファン歓喜

「ただいま!という感じ」なでしこと対戦のアメリカ女子、大ケガ乗り越えた2人が胸中明かす
